Subject: JD 2955 QUESTIONS & CONSIDERATIONS

Yorktown, TX
I'm looking at buying a 2955 with cab and MFWD. The tractor that I'm looking at now is a 90 yr model, and has 10,000 hrs on it. The motor and transmission have had basically nothing done to them. The motor has had the valves adjusted once. It does have a new injector pump on it, and the transmission has only had seals changed at one point or another. When you start it there is no blue smoke, and there is just a little puff of black smoke when you rev it up fast to 2200 rpm. It runs extremely smooth, but I think that the clutch is going out on it because when you put it in a high gear from a stop, it sqeals just a little before it grabs and holds. The dealer is going to put it in the shop to replace it.

Are there any other big things to look at on these tractors? This tractor is in very good shape on the outside and sounds extremely smooth, but the hrs. worry me. They want 20K for it, but that price is reasonably negociable. What do ya'll think? Thanks in advance for the answers.

I believe that is like a JD 2755 (which we have) with 2 extra cylinders in the engine. It is a European (mostly German) tractor with a French motor. Sometimes parts are really expensive. I was warned to check the planetary gears in the ZF front axle. They are sometimes removed because they are so expensive to fix. Radiator screens are $400+ each for the 2755 !! We bought aftermarket screens from Abilene Machine for less than 1/3 the Deere price.

I don't know about the 4wd, I got a 2940 has 5500 hrs. and only one clutch. The only bad I have found wrong with the tr. is a dry clutch. If you are putting a loader on it you will need to be very aware of slipping the clutch because you will have to replace it often. I roll hay with mine and when I back away from the windrow I always use lower gears as not to slip the clutch any more than possible. German tr. made in Mannheim mine has been trouble free.
Good luck

Decent tractor for it's day. I'd be leary of the hours though at that price,if it's never been touched.

I have one that is a 90 model that I bought new. It had a clutch put in at 2400 hours and has about 4300 now and will slip a little if taking off in 6 gear at times. I use 5th most of the time  and the clutch is the weakest part of the tractor. I did put a head gasket on mine last year but when the mechanic got into it there was a head bolt that was totally loose and he said was never tightened from the factory. I use mine totally for hay so it gets alot of clutching. Mine uses no oil and runs good. The hours and the price would bother me a little though. Mine is a 2 wheel drive with a cab.

I'm not really familiar with the 2955, but there were a bunch of 3140's around here that were essentially a bit older version of the same thing.
Those were good tractors, but given to hydraulic troubles (high pressure leaks)... and not the most fuel efficient... but good tractors. I think every singel one of them in the area here has 10000+ hours, but they've all see their share of repair work.
If you're looking at a Manheim Deere with those hours that's not had some work by now, I'd say you've got a timebomb on your hands.
There might be a price I'd pay for that tractor if I was into Deere's, but it's probably about half that money...
If I was looking at a Ford of that description, that's what I'd be thinking and I presonally think less of the Deere...

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
We've had several over the years. 2950s 2955s, and 3150s. All were basically the same tractor. In my opinion, the price is too high for those hours. Especially if he can't prove any major work has been done. I never was a fan of the Manheim tractors. They seemed like they were good for a long time, then all the sudden, they were a money pit. We never worked them hard either. We put 10K hrs on all of them and traded them off. We put clutches in every one. That was the worst part of the tractor. They were leaky tractors too. The lift capacity of the 3pt is not much to brag about either. I'd rather have a 4055. I'd say those 6 cylinder germans were OK, but they are not very durable. I'd rather spend more and get a 7200 or 7210. Or switch to a red 5240, but then you come back to the German issue again. I think 5240s were more durable than the MX120s that replaced them. We had a bunch of those red ones too.

I had a 2wd 2950 with cab, when it was new it was a pretty good tractor. At about 5000 hrs it became a money pit, I would not reccomend this one to anyone.

I absolutely agree with you except I'm baffled about your reference to a CIH 5240 and the "German Issue". The original Maxxums based on David Brown technology, excepting the CDC engine. The DB stuff has some limitations, especially the PTO, but it's hard to blame it on anyone other than the British and the guys at Case who kept buying into it.

I guess I will be the lone wolf here, I have a 3155. Purchased with 3200 hours Now has 7000 hours. Oil, filter, and fuel for the most part are all I have done. It is used for daily chores, cutting hay with a JD 1600a and raking with a V rake. It has been a great tractor, Mine gets very acceptable fuel economy. I was told JD used two different fuel injector pumps on these. One is good on fuel one is not. IF that is so I must have the good one. I have a 740 loader on it. I scoop lots of manure. It needed a clutch shortly after I got it. IT did not have a loader before I got it! And it is still fine! it is a MFWD.A wet clutch on a loader is desired ,but if you keep your foot off the clutch and use low gears, clutch trouble should be minimal!
