Subject: Service body on a SRW F350?

Have a flatbed currently. Adding another pickup. How does a late F350 4x4 with single rear wheels hold up to the weight of of a service body (looking at Knapheide) full of tools plus an air compressor?

Seems like everyone who talks about it says they are way too heavy for a 1 ton SRW but what is really the issue? Does the frame start cracking? Springs start breaking? Tires blowing? Or do people just not like seeing the helper springs being used 100% of the time?

Not late model, but I put about 60000 miles on an ‘01 F350 with a 9’ Service body, welder, compressor, torches and tools. Fully loaded every day, every mile. It was bought with 40k on it and is still in service today with probably 150k on it. No problems at all with frame or suspension. The GVW is a rating, it’s there to use.

If you want it to be a dually put a conversion on it. I have done two and they worked great. One nice thing about it being a dually you can put a wider service body on it which will give you more room. Cant think of the name of the dually conversion kits I used at the moment.

I have had 4 trucks like this. They are fine. Had a F250 and it is a little too much for the truck. Lots of frontened problems and had air helpers in the back.

The biggest problem we have is with tires. When you get a service bed loaded up it’s a lot of weight on 2 tires. Put some cheap 19.5 semi truck conversion rims on it and they do a lot better.

The one I'm looking at already has a service body on it so dually conversion won't be practical. It's sitting on a dealers lot. Has over 400 miles on it so I assume someone bought a cab and chassis, installed a service body (Knapheide) and decided it wasn't their thing so they traded it off?

It's a 17 so I'm hoping there may be deep cuts versus MSRP.

What does it cost to put a new Knapheide service body on an F350?

That's interesting. I'll have to look into that if I get it. Did you do just the rears or did you do the fronts as well?

Do all 4. You want to anyway so it matches. The fancy wheels are pretty expensive, but you can get the steel conversion rims for around $150 a piece. We drive on a lot of gravel and we went from 10,000 miles or less on a set of tires to 30,000 plus.

Thanks. I assume you're pretty much committed to it being a dry weather truck even with 4wd with semi tires on there?

SW KS, near Dodge City

I have no idea about these, but I bookmarked this a while back

Edit: A quick google search shows there's probably some decently aggressive 19.5s that will probably give you a lot better speed ratings than that fire tire.

That's my vehicle of choice I would be buying rather then talking about it , I'm on my 4 or 5 knapihide now I my opinion they are the best beds. Have ran that configuration for over thirty years. Edit to add on the tires . You go back to front when the back is half used always run very good new tires aired to the max on the back. You forgot your welder torch and 4 wheeler in the back. Yes it all fits .

On the bed it a 6 to 8 thousand add onlast I heard ,a lot of company's around here any more trade out the pickups underneath and keep the beds because of the cost. Usually go through 2 or 3 pickups to the life of one bed.

Anymore I pick the bed then decide if I can live with the truck under it ,

No hardly! the reason we stay with srw rather than duals in so we can fit down rows to rescue pivots . Just don't sink it stay on the dry side and don't stop it your on something firm.

Do you have pictures with all of that in there?

What do you use to organize the compartments? This will be a steep learning curve for me on organizing it if I buy it.

Here is a place that sells them. I bought some off amazon a few years ago that we’re substantually cheaper. Quite a few steel ones around the internet. There are quite a few pics on the website. My truck is in the shop now so I can’t get pics. Yes you can get sizes that are the same height.

Here are the available tires and tread patterns in the 19.5 tires with actual dimensions.

https://ricksontruckwheels.com/tires-195-truck.php

Right now I have the Hankook DH01 and cant remember the size and they have a decent lug tread. I’m going to try some of these mud tire retreads for my next tires. Reviews have been pretty good on them.

As far as carrying compacity of a srw vs. a drw I’m pretty sure they have the same frame and spring packs, so the only difference should be the amount of tires in the rear

Have a aluminum service body on my F350 service truck. Had to replace rear leaf springs cause right side had one broken. Put heavier set in and haven't had any problems since.
