Subject: Gravity wagon/ seed tender finally finished [a few pictures]

East Central Mo.
After spending lots of time with the help of my wife filling a Kinze split-row planter last year, we decided in order to save our marriage, we needed a one-man seed tender. Apparently, some women don't appreciate being yelled at, even though they can't read hand signals or look when you nod your head. Backing in from both sides on the front and filling the back rows from behind with an old #68 John Deere Auger cart with her manning the PTO wasn't to handy or quick. I've had an old M&W gravity wagon for years that I'd always thought would make a good seed tender. It pulls great at any speed and has two compartments. After seeing an ad on here from a guy in Iowa with a used hydraulic power unit and auger for sale, we decided it was time! I turned my box around on the running gears, so the auger would be on the driver's side when pulling with a pickup. I made a wider sloping hopper, a frame for the motor and battery, mounted the remote controls and made a few minor changes to the auger, which took much longer than I expected. I removed the winch from the auger tube and attached it to the wagon after seeing other's pictures on here. I like that better. I also made a tube holder out of 4" exhaust pipe and a new inlet for the telescoping tube, since Sudenga's just stuck out so far. I'm just hoping it isn't constipated there now. I also gave it two coats of graphite slip plate to the inside and lightly sanded it to make it slick. I think it's going to work, I slid out twice! I've enjoyed seeing what other people do and have gotten lots of good information from this site.

We have found that the crank/winch mounted on the AUGER TUBE is much handier when folding the auger back into its cradle, than having it mounted on the wagon. Hope you didn't make a change for the worse.

Nicely done! I put on on an older wagon years ago and love it! So much easier filling the planter. Wish I had done it years ago! I would like to rig up a roll tarp on top of mine. I just use tractor hydraulics and long hoses.

I always said " some things cheaper than a divorce" , you will wonder why you didn't do that a long time ago. Looks good you will gain more acres planted in a day too.

That looks excellent, nice work! Best way to tend seed IMO as long as it trails good. Can pull it with a pickup and just drop a pin and go. Also I really like your idea for holding the telescoping tube for transport. I just may have to copy that!

Nice job Jim, it looks like it should work slick. Good way to make use of an older wagon. I had a wagon like that for over 20 years. The two seperate compartments will work great for you. It doesn’t look like you have a roll top on it, it it doesn’t you might want to invest in one especially for those sudden thunderstorms that come up quickly.

Where did you get the telescoping shoot at? I have almost identical set up that will be used the first time this year. My only concern is filling individual boxes with a short spout that doesn’t telescope. M&w are nice with the split compartment to have 2 different varieties of beans. Great job

I run a manual valve on my hydraulic setup like yours. I end up using a tarp strap or 2 to hold it in. You might have to of the same. Usually kicks out when starting the auger up when it is full. Maybe you have an adjustable detent to handle that.

Nice job and the other poster is right about winch mounted on auger.

Really nice setup I'm sure it's going to make filling the planter a lot nicer and a lot less stressful.

Looks like you got a nice deal on the augermate and auger I don't remember seeing that listed in the classifieds.

I like all the features and way you put it all together.

Can you explain a little more about the hydraulic block setup ? I'm guessing that is for electric controls to start and stop the auger via controls or remote from the end of the auger ?

I'm looking forward to retiring the bucket brigade with my setup as well.

Edit: I like your preemptive thought on the guard in front of the recoil start to offer protection from being hit and causing damage.

East Central Mo.
I thought my post was getting too long, so I left some details out. To Kelly... Starting and stopping with the remote did kick the detent out. I remedied it with a tab of aluminum on the handle's pin. Just push and flip. A guy actually advertised this in central Iowa with a Parker wagon. I asked if he would be interested in just selling these parts since I already had a wagon and hated to pull another back to east central Mo. To Von.... I saw and envied your paint job. The hydraulic controls came with it, they were made by Lundell plastics. It has a very small remote keyfob that fits in the handle or in your pocket. Mine only uses two of the four buttons, on and off. The others must operate functions I don't have. I'd have preferred two larger buttons, they seem awfully small to find in a hurry. The solenoid valve also came from Lundell and works in combination with the remote. It diverts the oil through or around the motor. To diesel06... This was advertised as having a telescoping down spout. I didn't realize it was a shorter two piece until I got there. I ordered a 16ft. 3 piece from Shoup during their 10% off special. I lucked out, theirs are from Lundell and the remote still fits. To 345r... The owner said some hydraulic outfit in Iowa builds the power units. I don't know the specs, just that the motor is rated at around 10hp and the 14.50 decal is a torque specification. Also, from the advice on here, I replaced the brush flighting with cupped poly. I also made flanges for both telescoping tubes after seeing how hard that 6" flexible hose and clamp was to change. 4- 1/4" bolts changes them now for filling a wheat drill. The owner also stated that if you didn't unhook the battery it would run the battery down after a few days. Thinking it must be from the remote, I mounted a lighted rocker switch by the starter switch on the engine to remind me to cut the power when I kill the engine. I'd like to have a tarp someday, as much for leaves and tree buds falling in as rain.

Thanks for the additional info.

I was still not real happy with the IH red paint but now it is what it is.

Now I'm thinking about a hydraulic power pack and remote controls .......hmmmm

Guess we will see how this all works and maybe a phase 2 build will happen at a later date with further refinements :-)

If anybody knows the place in Iowa making the power packs that would be appreciated to compare specs and prices with the Ohio based http://buckeyehydraulics.com/pdf/auger-mate.pdf

Looks well done.

I have a question about the grey interior of your wagon. Is that polished up to have the beans slide better? Graphite spray? would sure love to find something that would make the grain slide better out of some wagons we have at the farm. Think the angle is decent. Wagons don't get used much so they don't get polished slippery very well.

How do you hold the auger over the cradle and crank it down at the same time?

I put 2 hoses from tractor outlet to back of planter and plug short hoses into quick couplers mounted on back of planter to run auger. auger has hydraulic shut off and also installed poly cupped flighting. Also mounted winch on auger to make one man folding back auger to its rest.I used old Parker 131 wagon and cut it off above braces and plated the top to set two bean boxes on it.

My situation only:

I know everyone says winch on tube but with my setup this is a PVC tube and I did not want another bracket or more stress on the plastic tube.

I can reach the winch handle and the upright chrome handle to easily swing and lower the auger into the cradle.

I ran into that problem. I made a bracket on the hopper with a couple of ears on it and then drilled a hole on the wagon. I crank it straight up vertically, poke the pin in and then un-crank. A little push will either make it swivel forward or backward.

I can see where yours will work ok, seeing where the pivot point is, but I have one similar to the o.p. and it takes a pretty good push to fold it back because of where it swivels, the hopper has to fold in.
