Central Iowa | What would you recommend for purchasing a chain saw sharpener? I'm running an 18" Stihl...occasional use for cleaning up yard/treelines/etc.

Lake Mills, Wisconsin | I like a dremal tool also with the correct stone for when I really dull one up. But I also like to use a file about every other tank of gas or so for a quick touch up.

East Central Ia, S. Waterloo | I gave up on the Dremel, I could never get them quite right. I went to the Harbor Freight bench model. I'm sure their not the best but I've never gotten chains so sharp and they make a straight cut when I'm done now. Watch the sales and you can get them for about $27.

Have used hand files & a Dremel in the past. Bought an Oregon bench mount last year, 520 IIRC, . Son does all the chain sharpening, seems to get along fine with it. A little pricey but beats running to town to have chains sharpened.

Ne Iowa | I bought a Timberline sharpener because I kept getting my angles all messed up using just a file. It cost a couple hundred bucks and now I'm back to using a file. I think a file gets a chain sharper and the edge lasts longer than especially the small stone sharpeners. Maybe I'll just switch back and forth. I know I could have bought a lot of chains for what I paid for the timberline.

Mid-Michigan | I have a Silvey. It does a great job but was pretty expensive. I sharpen well over a 100 chains a year. For occasional use, I'd sure just get good with a file. Buy about five chains and when they are a stewed up, take them to somebody with a grinder and true them up and touch up your rakers.

I just bought one of the stihl 2&1 chain sharpeners today. Best $40 I've spend, was quick, easy and effective. Already ordered another one for our smaller saw jcd107 - 3/8/2018 16:13 I have an electric bench sharpen that I have not used in three years. I now use a stil file and vise.

Centralia, MO | I'm not much of a fan of HF but their cheapo chain sharpener does good enough for what I need. Like you said, $27 or so.

Center Valley Wisconsin | Also have a Silvey chain grinder and Silvey raker grinder. They are awesome grinders but Silvey is out of business. You can get parts from Madsen's Shop and Supply. Might find them on eBay. They are worth the money.

I guess Trump came too late for them. My buddy has an Oregon. It does a good job also. Edited by AGB 3/8/2018 21:00

NW Washington | FWIW I remember reading about this Timberline hand cranked chainsaw sharpener in Farmshow and the editor gave it his personal seal of approval or "best buy". https://www.farmshow.com/a_article.php?aid=26036 Edited by JohnW 3/9/2018 01:06

Star Prairie, WI | That's a Pferd sharpener licensed to Stihl. Here's a link to their page, they have models for anything from 3/8LP to .404 https://www.pferdusa.com/products/201b/201b01/201b010503P.html The only drawback to them is they don't work if you're using skip chain. Somerville, Indiana | We have a Stihl electric bench chain sharpener, works good for chains that are off the saw...I rather use a 7/32 file on a 3/8 chain with the saw turned upside down in a good vise and usually get by with the hand file, use the gauge and flat file for the raker...The hand file along with being careful when sawing sure gets a lot more use out of a new chain before the tooth is gone.

Chaffee, Western New York | That's interesting. Husky has a handy foolproof little roller guide. How does this Pferd thing get used?

Eastern Oregon | +1. I recently cut about 8 cords of black locust hardwood. I'm sure glad that I discovered this tool. Sharpens cutters and sets rake height quickly and efficiently. I paid $40...well spent!

I like the Husky guide too, but have a grinder so rarely use it. As to the Pferd, here's a video. They're simple to use. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JND69lVVjUY

Chaffee, Western New York | Thanks. That's interesting. However last Stihl chains had the most obnoxious anti kickback rakers and cam links that wouldn't work with anything but a good grinder or a bare file. Going by the video they weren't sharpening Stihl chain.

White Stone, Virginia | +1. Pferd or Stihl hand sharpener by far the best! Better, easier and faster than any of the electrics. Edited by Rawleigh 3/9/2018 13:45
