| Hi looking at a 1989 model 9600. Is there any particular problems with this year? I noticed it had a button on the armrest for park brake. Any reason to avoid it? I assume all years have same capacity idk?

Southern Pa. | '89 is the first year for those combines. They kept improving them as they went. I'm not a fan of the electric parking brake. Personally, I would try hard to find a later model, at the very least a '91 or newer, preferably a '94 or newer. Contour Master wasn't a factory option until '95. A later model, if it doesn't have a ton of hours, and was cared for, is a good machine. |

I had a 1997 best combine and simple. Sometimes wish I still had it. |

Central ND | '89 will only have a 2 speed throttle |
| Ya I noticed the 2 speed throttle too. |

Sunburst Montana | We had an 89' bought used in 1992. Worked fine except we lost the shoe fan bearings. Traded it off in 1997. Got a neighbor with an 89' 9600. It was the first one in the area. They still run it and I think it has close to 4,000 sep hrs. |

nw kansas | Go later 94 or later, had a 89 and they had some weak spots that they fixed later. 94 machines custom cutter noticed a difference so take it for what it's worth. |

Northeast ks | We have a 1990 9500, and it's got over 6000 hours. The two buttons talked about are not a problem. I have heard these early combines had a different injection pump with a little less power, but it doesn't give you any troubles like the later ones do? Wooden straw walker blocks are probably better. The rotary screen drive belt is a little goofy, the later ones were fixed better, so probably better cooling. Other than that, it's pretty good. |

| The 89 is a lot cheaper then my other option of a 95 model. Just harvesting grass seed so little things are not that important. Just needs to run trouble free. |
| The one I had did not have a cylinder curtain inside like later ones did but could be added. Also mine had wooded walker blocks but were later changed to aluminum with grease zerts. The straw walker crankshafts were changed at the same time. The 2 speed throttle worked OK but I liked the 3 speed better for road travel. If using a 30 ft grain table most had 18.4 x 38 tires/duels instead of 30.5 singles. |

It's true, guys on this board like to spend other guy's money. There can be a 20k difference between a 90 and 95. |

Duals on a 9600 would be a VERY rare thing in western Oregon.
I don't see how the three position throttle would be helpful for roading. I pretty well only used the middle position for getting the engine warmed up at the beginning of the day.
I'm not so sure the aluminum walker blocks were an improvement. I wouldn't consider wood blocks a downside to having an older machine
Even a first year 9600 is going to be a lot better machine than any 20 series, and people still get a lot of work done with them. They're all old machines now, so it probably is more important to find one that's priced well for the condition.

Faunsdale, AL | Lots of combines in big corn areas with duals to straddle the rows of stalks that would damage the wide singles.
Biggest thing is to know what is worn out and will need replacing vs what has already/recently been replaced. If you send it into the dealer shop to have it all done, it could dramatically increase your investment in a 27 year old machine. Even doing it all yourself, seems like you can always spend a thousand here and a thousand there pretty easy.
I have an 89 with 30.5 singles that I run a Contourmaster equipped 930F on using a Headsight box to convert to the Dial a Matic header height control. Finding a good used flex head is a challenge, so having the ability to run newer models widens the field considerably.

NW KS/ SC ID | how much are they asking? you might look into what it would cost to ship one in from out of state. might be able to get a late one for less than the local outfit is asking for the early one. |
| About 10k different between older is cheaper. Same separating hrs. Doing engine oil scan on both. If they both pass oil test, I'll be going with the cheaper. They're both in good running condition. |

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | The OP is going to run a pickup head, so auto header height control could hardly be less important.
The point about knowing what has been replaced/updated and when is a very good one.

'94 was the best machine for us out of a half dozen of them. '97 with the 50 year anniversary decals were good too. The 94 just kept going and going and going. 95 and later will get you an air ride seat. |

| If you were trading so often you had a half dozen different ones, how could you say which is best. I wouldn't think you had any of them long enough to tell what the problems were going to be. Unless you farm a bunch and had them at the same time....... |

sw corner ia. | it would take someone with just a little experience about 30 minutes to figure out what was worn out on one of these.
great machine for the dollars spent. very little computer controls which is a huge plus. |

Bunch of acres spread out over 2 separate farms. 89, 91, 94, 95, 97 and a 9610. 94 was the best. Bunch of people from my town would tell you the same thing. We are pretty much ran the same exact machines for about a decade. |

ND | We had a '90 9500 & now a '96 9500 that has RWD & Contour feederhouse. Like the 3 speed throttle for unloading standing by truck, moving even short distances is better at 1600 rpm than full throttle. You'll like the quieter cab if you've had a 20 series before. There are other improvements to the newer walkers each yr moving up over a 1989 or 1990 machines. |

No sir, just wanting to see if they are grossly overpriced and wanting to give him a royal screwing. :) I was gonna post a link to a local dealer that has 9600s in the teens.
If a guy is gonna settle for green, best get it cheap. ;) |

Southern Pa. | LOL!!!!!
Edited to add, every area is different. In our area, a 9600 combine priced in the teens wouldn't be worth the effort to go look at. It would be totally ragged out.

sw corner ia. | they built a zillion of these things, they were a pretty good machine and there are a bunch of them that are still usable and looking for a home. this equates to too many units on a market of very few buyers which equals a very low price for any of them. therefore, take your time and find the best one you can- it won't cost much more. |
