My tires on my 12' 550 sportsman are not bald, but don't bit well anymore. I don't ride in mud pits but do get on some greasy stuff from time to time. And right now snow and ice since we are calving. In the summer I will jump on and go scout field so it will get some road time. I know I don't want anything that looks like a tractor lug. TIA. Tell me what you like.

Have a few customers in my area that I sell ATV tires to for SxS's mostly. Sell alot of GBC Dirt Commanders, and Dirt Tamers (6 and 8 ply). They also have some DOT rated tires(much like a light pickup tire) in a 10 ply rating that I think would be outstanding. I also sell some EFX Motoclaw tires that I like as well. I'm with you, I don't like tractor tires on my UTV, the more tread on the face the longer they will last and the more resistant they'll be to punctures.

Sedona Rip Saws are tough as nails as well, but ride terrible and run small to size.

I am happy with my Roctanes, will buy another set if these ever wear out. You really can't go wrong with the old Carlisle AT 489. They are cheap and get a decent bite.

I was just looking at the rip saws. How bad is the ride?

Maxxis Ceros are a good all around farm tire, go good, ride smooth and are tough.

What are the downsides of the tractor lug styles? Have been looking at some Mudlite tires probably the same uses as OP, but want to be able to go where ever I need to. Have worn out Carlisle 489 now, but I didn't wear them out.

Well there's two things about the rip saws-

If you run them at around 10 psi to get some sidewall flex and help ride, the sidewalls will start to seperate externally, which will appear as a huge gash on the sidwall. I've run them like that for a couple thousand miles before they finally bite the dust.

If you run 12psi+ in them the ride is firmer, but the sidewall issue doesn't seem to come back. They use a HD truck tire rubber for these tires, they are heavy but also very tough. also have a deep 1 1/8 tread lug and will wear like iron for years. I have some still here on polaris rangers that are going on 4 years and 8,000 miles.... a 26" tire new will measure about 25.5" on the machine, 24" worn. The stiff rubber and shorter sidewall I think gives it the stiff ride, but as I said, the tradeoff is the durability.

My back after a few years of running them cannot tolerate them anymore, so everything I have here now is running a GBC dirt commander, or Dirt Tamer. I like the tamers probably the most. great tread pattern, and wear for years. even with the 6pl they seem very durable.

I like my Maxxis Bighorn Original, not the 2.0. Have no experience with others but these have been very good on my wheeler. Do well in sand, mud, and snow. I haven't put enough miles on gravel to see how they wear but so far so good. Not a mud tire, but they will dig and throw roosters, and still give a nice ride.

I sold hundreds of 4 wheeler tires in the years I was in the tire business, my question too. Why no tractor style lugs? I thing every farmer who came in wanted at least a 6 ply tractor type lug on theirs.

Noise, vibration, and wear. First three that come to mind. Not saying they don't have there place but it's not here.

Dirt devils on our Rancher.  Don't remember who makes them, but they have been on there 10,000 miles with no flats and still have some tread left with a lot of blacktop road time.

I got two years out of mine. But I see more corn and bean stubble than road time. Usually get about 3k miles on a set before I have more plugs than tread.

I see they make 12 ply tires with a much harder compound. That's what I'm trying next.

Mudlites don't like blacktop. I've been running 589's now. Better, but not perfect. I had really good luck with the old mud busters on my little Yamaha 250 back in the day.

This is it, best one I've ever used, 4 quads running it.

Maxxis Bighorn

It isn't a mud pit tire, but the tread is very deep, great for "farm" mud. Radial gives it a good ride as well. I really like them.
