Has anyone switched a forklift over from hard rubber to pneumatic?

What size tires ? With the small hard tire models you can't.

Our first fork lift had solid 15 or 16 solid tires with good tread. We sold it and bought another one with 15 pneumatic tires. We will never have solid tires again! The difference is like a 2wd pickup and a 4wd pickup once you get off concrete.

If you are going the same size you can switch from hard to air.

My guess is you are asking if you can take an indoor forklift and put air tires on it. I have seen a couple hack jobs over the years and they got it done, but man was it ugly

'Indoor' lifts are designed with 3" clearance to the ground, 'Outdoor' lifts are designed with 5 and also have way more space in the wheel well for bigger tires. The final drive ratio on 98% of lifts are different as well. It would be like driving a semi that is stuck on the high side.

Just a few weeks back I took a smooth tire indoor and had new tires installed, same size, but a treaded tire. That helps some. Helps more when original tires are worn down an inch or 2.

It depends what type of tire you are referring to.

A forklift with cushion tires (something unique to North America, they really aren’t used anywhere else in the world) cannot be converted to air/pneumatic tires. Generally, you’ll know if your forklift has cushion tires if the model of the forklift has the letter C in it.
Examples:

Toyota 7FGCU25 = forklift with cushion tires

Toyota 7FDU25 = forklift that doesn’t have cushion tires.

Now, if you don’t have a cushion tired forklift and your forklift has pneumatic tires, then the answer to your question is yes. Forklifts with pneumatic tires can be equipped with solid-shaped pneumatics tires. If you have a tire like that, then yes, you can remove those tires and replace with air tires. You’ll know if you have a forklift like this if a) your forklift model doesn’t have the letter C in the model designation and b) the size on the forklift tire reads something like 700:12 or 825:15, or something like that.
