far sNSW , Australia | Tandem disc I just bought has a couple of tiny cracks in the frame. The whole frame can be filled with oil for extra ballast. There is a little oil in there that hasn't leaked out the cracks (looks like sump oil). Wondering if it is dangerous to attempt to weld. If I grind out the crack and carefully Mig weld. The first photo didn't come up very well. 2nd photo, it is in the middle on the right side where the brace meets the main RHS, at the bottom just in the shadow. The crack is about 2 inches, 1/2 underneath and 1/2 on the front. Yes, that would be dangerous to weld . . . . kind of the same as welding a fuel tank or old oil barrel.

Completely full of oil? no problem with welding, other than the oil contamination in the actual crack. You'll likely see some pretty good porosity until you burn off the oil, so make a tiny pass just to seal the crack, then go back over and lay into it with your filler pass. I welded up a diesel tank after draining and throwing about 10 lbs of dry ice in there to displace any oxygen. I'm still here.

| drill a hole in the start and at end of the crack, this will stop the crack from spreading . Then weld over holes and the crack. On the oil, we always take a torch, and burn the oil out of the crack, then weld. Also can take exhaust from a motor, and plumb in disc oil fill hole with a hose, the carbon monoxide from the motor will displace the oxygen in frame and keep thing on safe side Edited by mb2347 3/8/2017 11:55 | |||
