northeastern Ohio | Need a new set of teeth for an excavator bucket. What is the advantage of the "tiger tooth" style? I see there are some tigers that have two points (some guys have the doubles on each end of the bucket and single tigers in the middle). Most of the time this bucket will be pulling trees out of fence rows, but occasionally it digs ditch (start of tile runs). Which tooth style should I get?

Central IL | Man I couldn't imagine digging starts with those pointy teeth. Impossible to uncover the main with any teeth, let alone those pointy things. As for tree work, never used that style of teeth. I could see the doubles getting jammed full of roots. No matter which teeth you go with, do yourself a favor and make a plate out of 1/2" steel to put over your teeth to dig tile connections. That way you can uncover the main with the bucket and not even put a scratch on it.

Pointy teeth are for rock. Normal teeth for everything else. I think the double points are for softer rock like shale. The rock teeth DO make short work of tree root ripping and grab the soft tree stumps better, but like stated above really aren't well suited for tiling. Perhaps try a set of points and use the affore mentioned blunt edge that hooks to the teeth to give you a nice flat edge to tile with? Edited by Fingers77 11/22/2016 12:18

East Central Ia | +1 I made a smooth edge for digging tile and footings. I use it for everything, even tree work. With a little play in the bucket and practice you can uncover a tile without even scratching it. I actually like the smooth edge for tree work as i can use the bucket like a knife and cut off limbs if needed. I made mine from a section of replacement grader blade. It has an cutting edge to it and works perfect for my farm uses.

W.C. Mo. | The tiger double tooth are great for rock but I had problems breaking them in trees. The teeth can bind up while the tree is twisting and break. Do not have that problems with regular teeth. This was on a 40,000 lb hoe tearing out BIG oak trees.

Southeast SD | I believe the tiger tooth is also helpful for digging through frost better than a standard tooth. I also can't imagine them doing a very good job in trees and roots.

South Western Ontario, Canada | IF you weld a plate on the teeth, make sure you can remove the teeth and install a set of regulars on!!!! We have a bar on our excavator and its fine most of the time., in hard heavy clay and frost its USELESS. DON'T limit yourself that way.

So. IL | Don't run and teeth that flair out in tree work, they get annoying when plugged with roots and limbs.
