Subject: comparing 3 point finish mowers?

NC Iowa
i am looking for a 3 point finish mower to mow field edges and waterways and open lawn areas that are now mower withj a zero turn hustler X-one.

so far the choices i know of are king kutter, woods, buhler farm king, land pride.

i am sure there are others.

von mentioned in a post that he thought his king kutter worked good but had a whiny gearbox. some have swinging blades, different blade speed, ect.

looking for some opinions to help narrow down the choices. price wise the king kutter in a 72" is about $1500 at mills fleet farm.

thanks

King Cutter is going to be a lot cheaper to buy. Landpride is a great machine, Woods is as well. Can't speak to Farm king or KK quality. Woods makes a 90" mower with swinging blades, great for semi-rough mowing as you describe. All other Woods and LP choices will have fixed blades. Any will have gearboxes made in the land of almost right.

Woods just sent out a bulletin this past week essentially saying the FTC had spanked them for false 'made in USA' claims.

Yes the King Kutter does well in lawn areas. I'm certainly not overpowering it on a 8N Ford.

The gearbox whine is a negative but I suppose it depends on how many hours of continuous running you use it. I'm often mowing for long periods up to 4-6 hours at a clip. It does a good job but in taller or wetter grass it also sometimes discharges kind of clumpy grass instead of a smooth even spread. I've removed the deflector mounting plate and discharge chute which seems to help some.

I've always thought of building my perfect mowing machine but would probably have so much in it to get all the features I really wanted that it would be cost prohibitive.

I started off with a Land Pride in 1994, ran it literally to death by 2012. Bought a new Frontier (Woods) 72", and I think it's quite a bit tougher than the LP. BIL bought a KK at TSC and it just doesn't hold up, hard to keep bearings in it. To the point that we share my mower and his tractor.

I don't really think you can go too wrong with eithe LP or Woods. The biggest issue is restraining yourself from using any of them as a rotary brush mower.

I had a Landpride rear discharge. Thought it would be great for going around flower beds, etc. It was a windrowing pos. I could cover more ground and do a better job with the rider.

We have a woods RD7200 that dad beats the crap out of behind a 4720. We bought it used and have only done blades and a belt once. Excellent cut as well.

I will second the Woods RM 990. Newer style has a different number.

I bought ours used 7-8 years ago.

We have absolutely beat the you know what out of it.

Blades do swing, but still does a great job giving thinks a finished look.

This mower is a little more expensive but built like a tank.
