Does anyone have recommendations for some good sounding and reliable train horns. I dont need them to be crazy loud, more for the tones than anything. Is a 5 horn setup any better than a 3 ? I was hoping to hear some demo's at MATS last weekend, I talked to a few guys at booths, but did not get to hear any.

Liberty, MO | You will need more air tanks if you get train horns, they use boocoo's of air.

southeastern ohio | Co worker has them. I can't tell you much about them but they loud and they use a bunch of air. He just switched trucks and bought different sets of horns and has a set for sale. Email me if you want his number Tim

Northeast Louisiana | I have a set, they are loud. It's plumbed into my air tank. I have an electric switch to open the air. If you want a nicer sound, most guys I know run a air line into cab and put a ball valve inline. I also have seen actual train horn mounted on trucks that came off trains. Mine came from a truck chrome shop. Paid around $300 for mine about 12 years ago. Edited by SteigerSt320 4/3/2015 21:02

Brant Ontario, Canada | +1 to the air use. I knew a guy that had a hot rod Peterbilt back in the day and it had a set off a locomotive. He told me the first time he laid on the train horn the yellow button popped because it gobbled up all his air. He later added a tank and check valve protected it to isolate it all from the brake air. Said he was glad he wasn't rolling down the road when it happened. Food for thought, anyways. North Central Iowa | I want a big ship fog horn. Anyone know where I can get one? Not joking, like to get one and a propane tank to store the air in, mount both on a trailer and mess with the neighbors.....

Had one on the trash compactor I ran while working at a landfill. Friend who lived a mile away could hear it plain as day when I really had to get on it to get a drivers attention. Edited by Merle 4/4/2015 05:42

Dearfield Co. | I laugh at all the comments about how much air these will use. Time a good 2 horn setup from cutout point of the compressor to when the air is completely drained and then try it with a 3 chime or 5 chime nathan train horn----------yes they use air but so does any air assecory. We have them on every one of my trucks and have had since the early 80s. It takes a lot to get one to bleed down to 60 lbs going down the road and that extended of a blow will destroy a regular train horn. Time how long a train blows them at a crossing and you will see they don't even stay on them all that long. I have also had the steam type horns that I called chimes --------these use air worse than a nathan or leslie train horn. And they are the highest decibel . If you can find one the old railroader from MO built in the 70s I would and then I would put it up . HE had a limited build on them and I wish I would of kept mine True train horns don't like dirt ------------as well as they are slightly temperamental over time as the internal diagphrams will get a rust like corrosion on the stainless disc. I have bought a bunch of the readl deal from a guy with the screen name T.AKERS On ebay he has a couple of other screen names to. Expect to give $450 up on good 3 chime horns. I have a new set in the box that was a gift of 5 chime that I turned down $1600 for. A little more advice if you have a buddy that says he will steal them don't as most have anti tamper bolts holding them on the engine and those will have 4 or 5 coats of paint. Everyones first instinct is to thrown them off the roof of the train and its a good way to spot stolen ones if the main frame has been broken and welded.

THANKS Roundsquare !, this is where I wanted to start. I am narrowing it down to a Nathan M3 or Nathan K5LA, leaning on the M3. I have my computer hooked to my stereo and played the tones, you would think I been living in railyard, or show truck parade, LOL Thanks to the other posters, Iowa 80 has horn samples too, and I did find two others, but the quality of the sound files are not as good as Texas Air Horns site. My Dad has Lionel trains he hobbies with and his newer diesels are digital sound, they come close to these on the web.

East central Indiana | My brother has one of the old ones from one of my grandpa's cars. for weddings we used to hook it into the brake lights so everytime you touched the brake pedal it would go off. Pretty funny.

We run these on our truck. They are REAL loud and good tone. We got them at a Kenworth dealer. We wired them to the steering wheel switch and they don't take that much air. If you are anywhere near and not expecting it, you will jump a few inches off the ground when they go off! We park in town next to some railroad tracks every now and then. A train came through while we were waiting for air pressure to build one morning. He honked for the crossing and we honked back. The engineer was leaning out the window giving us the thumbs up as he went by. (train horns.jpg) Attachments ---------------- train horns.jpg (123KB - 212 downloads)

Ravenna Ohio | Our firetrucks have a pressure cut off switch on the train horns. But then we are pretty extreme in using them.

Take a look as a Leslie RS3L Supertyfon . I got scared at work ( freight train conductor ) one time by a semi with a set of horns. Just finished blowing the crossing when some one else starts 2 longs a short and a long. Can't seen down the track for the curve. Will make you double check your paper work that let's you be on the track very quickly. Edited by nsdtk 4/4/2015 18:18

Dearfield Co. | I have K5la nathans on my personal truck. But out of respect I never do it around other trains. Mostly around wandering cARS about midnight to 3 am
