Subject: Good Truck or Not - 2000 International 9200i ??

Montana
Hello,

I posted a while back about a 2000 Volvo with a condo sleeper. We have passed on the Volvo, but I found this truck for what seems like a good price. We aren't familiar with Internationals, so what would they be like? Do guys that have them like them? What about the N-14 Cummins? It has 700,000 miles so would that be a red flag? It will be farm use, not OTR. Thanks for any insight.

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I bought a 2002 9200i that had been owned by Wal-Mart. I bought it from a truck jockey. It has a Detroit 60 series engine, day cab and over 950,000 miles. The jockey had connections with his BIL who stretched it, installed an air tag axle, painted it and put a grain box on it. I've had it for several years and have been happy with it. This is for farm use only.

The clutch/transmission brake was out so I had my mechanic replace the clutch itself as well as the transmission brake due to the miles. This was done this summer. I've had a few minor problems with air leaks and other routine items but nothing serious.

It seems that parts (oil filters etc.) are fairly reasonable when compared to what I normally pay for similar farm machinery parts.

We have a 1996 9400 with the N14 9spd like it very much. Haven't had any troubles with it went over the road in it for about 10 years have about the same miles on it now. We put a air lift axle on it for heavy loads.

Any records available on previous work done to engine? Have a friend that has a 96 Binder with 460 N14, has almost 1.2 million miles, lower end redone, original pistons, rings and sleeves, uses a couple gallons of oil between changes, runs and pulls good.

EDIT, that 96 is in daily use, says he'll never sell it.

I will look into some records. It's on consignment. Salesman said a guy bought it to make big money in the Bakken, but after two months called it quits. Not the lifestyle he wanted to live......

I've run 4 9400's so far. Great trucks. Had a 91 with Detroit 870,000 when traded, loved that truck! Traded for current 07 with isx, ultra (****ty)shift tranny drives me up a wall!!egr engines SUCK!!! Still running 94, and 99 both with n-14. The 99 is a lower geared heavy haul spec truck that we had cam and lower end bearing trouble in at 650,000 when it locked up sitting in the mechanics shop, possible bad 500 hp "tune" by last owner/ jockey. For farm trucks they are great trucks. Some have steering stops set out so easyier on tires, adjust in to make them turn tighter if needed to manuver better. Listen to engine when it's running make sure it's smooth and even. If it has a boost gauge, drive it and make sure it hits 30 psi and the needle doesn't flutter. If needle is fluttering its a sign of cam/valve trouble. Oil pressure should be around 20 warm idle. If you can get some service records that would be awesome. Im guessing its time for a clutch, if it has original clutch in that truck. I wouldn't be afraid of this truck if engine sounded good and had good oil pressure tho.

Good to know. What would you consider a fair price if you were buying it?

Only problem with most of the international trucks is they use a 1/2 rad. Most motors can't be increased in power due to heat issues. Radiators are sized for hp at initial purchase. If previous owner turned it up you will have premature engine failure.

Honestly I can't really pin down a price. I don't buy them, just drive them and work on them. My honest guess would be 15-18k tho. Depending on tranny option, tire condition ( tread depth and wear/uneven wear patterns) and overall appearance inside and out of truck. If seats are full of cigarette burns and it smells like a chimney, and exterior paint is flaking or bad than maybe a little less. Just my opinion tho.

I think the big blocks have the cooling capacity for more hp. Turned 1 of our from 370 to 460 with no issues other than increasing milege by .5 .
