Northwest Ohio | Garden post below made me want to ask what people think about the garden seeders? Do they work good? I have watched a couple of videos and it seems like the front/ drive wheel slipping might be an issue. If it is, what about running a drywall screw though the wheel (opposite the lug) for cheap, extreme traction spike? Reviews, insight, or alternatives appreciated

Tip of the Thumb of Michigan | We use our earthway every year with out trouble. It comes with like 8 different plates for the different garden seeds. It has an adjustable seed trench depth. When you plant you have to push down pretty firmly to get good furrow penetration and good packing with the "closing wheel", so drive slip is never an issue.

NW Iowa. / SW Arizona | I bought one probably 15-20 years ago. I personally thought it was a waste of money. It's around here somewhere unless it got thrown away. I just googled it to see what they cost, looks like they are over $100,,,,,,can that be right? If that's the case if I knew where mine was I'd easily sell mine for $25 but I'd feel guilty selling that high so would be negotiable :-). Edited by IowaMark 5/13/2014 01:16

NW Washington | I had one of those seeders and it was OK if you were seeding something where you had a fair amount of seed in the hopper, but if you are only seeding a packet of seed there is not enough seed in the hopper for the vertical plated to dip out seed correctly. If you get too much seed in the hopper that can cause problems too. So if you have a big sweet corn patch it would be OK, but for a 50 foot row of carrots, not so much.

Cental Indiana | Parents have had one for years. We plant a fair amount of sweet corn and always used our 6 row corn planter. When we went to a twelve row it was a pain so I bought an old 292 JD 3 point planter. After several years of mediocre planting I sold it for $350 and went to TSC and bought an EarthWay for $85. Dad and I planted all our sweet corn with theirs and mine last year. It was actually faster than hitching the two row and driving to the field. Yes a lot of walking but still faster. I have no complaints with mine. Thinking about buying another one and some aluminum angle iron and making a two row.

High Springs, Florida | I till my home veggie patch with 6' rototiller on the back of a tractor. It fluffs the sand up pretty good. If you walk into the rototilled sand, you will sink in about 4". In this sandy soil, the Earthway does not seem to get very good traction, unless it rains on it a couple of times. But then the weeds start. I need to figure something else out. Maybe stale seedbed, let it rain on it, then roundup the whole thing, then plant to my hearts content with the Earthway. Edited by Mike Shimek 5/13/2014 11:44

Manson IA | We use ours for beans, corn, carrots, raddishes.... The key is to make sure the ground is tilled well. It doesn't deal well with muddy conditions, or root balls, or anything like that. If the ground is tilled well and dry it will slide right through. I also use graphite to lube it up so the plate spins easier.

Northwest Ohio | Thank you all, I have order one. Unfortunately I know my wife will want me to plant 50' rows of carrots, radishes, and other small seeds. Looks like I might need to tape some paper in the hopper to partition it off. Regardless thank you

I am also interested in one of these for sweet corn. What is the seed spacing with these, with the corn plate? Just wondering what row spacing to go, I usually only want 20-24K at the most, at 30".

southeastern ill(on the Ohio) | I have an earthway and an older golden harvest seeder the golden harvest has a larger press wheel and a better seed covering feature- they both do a good job in dry worked soils

Cental Indiana | Sorry took me a few days to get back to you. According to the operating book it plants sweet corn at 7.2" spacing. (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Manson IA | Be aware the spacing is NOT very accurate.
