Found a 66 Malibu for sale. All I know so far is it runs and drives, has spare engine and new tires. Interior good to great, some minor rust showing. I have no idea yet on engine/tranny or other things. Owner died so they are selling it. Not much info yet but what is a rough value on it? I need somewhere to.start.

There still are a ton of variables. Does it have the spare motor because the original one is trashed? You said some rust is showing but what about the floor pans and other spots where the rust may be lurking but not yet showing? Would you want to redo the interior or leave as is? Chevelle can be a high priced purchase but I probably would not be willing to go over $5000 and maybe less after seeing the car.

That was my first car. Mine was black with red interior. Had the 283 V8 with 2 speed Powerglide transmission. Rocker panels, front and rear fenders all went from the bottom up. No matter what I did to it, still only got around 10 MPG. Last thing I did was replace the 2 BBL Rochester carb with a 2 BBL Holley, with manual choke! No difference in fuel economy. I am sure it was all due to the Powerglide transmission. No locking torque converter and no overdrive back in those days. I think my father paid around $2600 for it, new.

Be aware of hidden rust out where the rear roof support (not the right term, but I have CRS) comes down to meet the rear decking near the back window. That back window is set in, with a 4" or so set-back from being even with that support. 66 and 67 Chevelles are the only ones with that design, and it is notorious for rusting out.

I'm with the previous poster wondering why there is a spare engine. What's in it now and what is the spare and why would be good questions.

Please keep us posted on this..........a '66 Chevelle was his first car as well.  327/325hp, 4sp, bench seat, white w/black interior. Would love to find another one...........it's always nice to see someone else find a treasure.

These cars seem to rust worse than anything I have ever seen. Most of it can be repaired but some of it seems to be labor intensive . Look around the body mounts first as that is where it gets intense cost wise

Is it a 2 door hardtop or 4 door family chariot? They can LOOK solid but still hold a lot of rust. Repairs and parts are available but much more expensive than the old days

Obviously, an original numbers matching 375 HP 396 will be worth way, way more than an inline 6 with a 3 on the tree. As far as what its worth, I would do a web search on '66 and '67 Chevelles and look at as many examples as you can find that are similar to the one you are interested in then knock off 10%-20%. I am selling an old Impala and struggled to figure out what to ask and did a web search then added a cushion to make sure I didn't under value the car. BTW, my dad had a yellow '66 Chevelle with a 350HP 327 that would keep up or beat the 375 HP 396.

My dad had a 66' wasn't gonna win a race at a drag strip but it was clean. I think he sold it in Daytona for 14,000? But this was before economy went down and people paid more for hot rods at Daytona show.

Chevys of that era had a problem with the rear window channel rusting out and draining rain water in the trunk, which then rusted out the trunk floor..
Lift the trunk mat to see what is the condition of the trunk floor.

Learn how to read the VIN number and what it means and get the numbers off the engine blocks to determine what engines they are. A 6 cyl isn't worth much collector wise whereas an original 396 4 speed is worth quite a bit. Dad has a restored '65 Malibu SS convertible. The 66 and 67 are the best looking of the early body styles.

The 327/350 HP Hydraulic cam was the best cam . That cam in any small block with a set of headers , at idle just said "let's get it on " !

That would have been an L 79 327. That same engine in a '65 or '66 Chevy II Nova was probably the quickest 1/4-mile car ever built (In pure showroom stock form) . During the '60's and early '70's those Novas were matched against Hemi 'Cuda's in SS/A class in NHRA drag racing. Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins won the US Nationals Super Stock class (in 1967) in a '66 Nova with L79 327. Those Novas hooked up incredibly well. In 1967, Chevy quit putting the L 79 in Novas, instead putting them in the new Camaro. In 1968, Chevy built a handful of Novas (New body style) with the potent L 79. The L 79 was built between 1965 and 1968. They found their way into Novas, Chevelles, Camaro's, and Corvettes.

I had a '68 Nova with an L 79 in the early '70's. A set of Lakewood traction bars, Hooker Headers, Turbo mufflers, and a Hurst Super Shifter and I had a giant killer

Dad had a '67 SS 396 350 hp 4spd manual.

My mother has the original invoice when he bought it. I think it was about $3700.
