Subject: Skinny ATV Rowcrop Rims/Tires

Has anyone modified their 4Wheeler with skinny rims and tires too squeeze down 15inch rows, just for scouting, I have heard of people custom-fitting motorcycle rims/tires. didn't know if any one had tried this.

Thanks

don't really think modification is necessary, just buy two more front wheels for the rear.

Front tires on my polaris RZR are a 245-70R12 (actually off a sportsman 800 quad), which is only 10inches wide. Your issue would be getting the correct spacers needed to straddle, which can be calculated easily.

ATV is setup togo down the rows right now, and it fits, but the issue is late season when rows fill in.

Make wheel shields for it like a sprayer has. I've seen scouts that do it with a dirt bike and it seems to work well.... I'm not sure how it would work on the rear axle though...

Not likely what you're looking for, but I thought of this pic that friend of mine in Kansas put on Facebook. 3/8" wide wheels for scouting wheat.

Here's what we have for ours, just for draining water. We don't row crop anything so I have no idea how well it would work for spacing.

Does that thing not sink and get stuck pretty easy?

In early nineties, we found some "donut" tires and rims at the junk yard that fit on our Honda 4 wheeler at that time. Might still be possible to find a set that would work and very affordable.

I knew a row cropper that had a big tired Yamaha motorcycle he scouted on and liked it. He said it went down the rows real well. Maybe a TW 200 or something not sure about the model.

Trevor,

how do you like those wheels? I've been wanting to get a set for a couple of years for one of our quads. Those the one's from Dave's in Oak Bluff?

Yeah those come from Dave Horn out of Oak Bluff.

I would guess we've had them for 3/4 years now, and used them every year but last. They are built out of heavy rims (I think they are a small tractor rim of some sort), and the tires show pretty little wear. We take them off when not draining, they tear up the yard more than normal atv tires, and they ride very rough. We adjust the suspension to be as soft as it goes to help a little. Its nice to have the low range on the atv, and nice to have independent front and rear brakes, so you can spin them to get a deeper trench than what weight alone will get you. The ruts it leaves in the fields don't bother the sprayer/swather/combine/tractors nearly as much as a tractor does.

do you find the ruts wash in with lots of water movement because they are so narrow.

It apparently sinks but does not get stuck. I've never seen it in person, just thought it was interesting and fit in this thread.

We used to have both a Honda FatCat and Yamaha BigWheel in the early 90's. Those things were great farm bikes, especially the FatCat. If Honda built a FatCat with a the same motor as the 400ex, I'd buy the first two our dealer could get.

Not really, I think at most we've had to go back once or twice after another rain. Our mud is pretty heavy here though.
