Subject: Another form 2290 question............

tennessee
I have an old cab over that I only use around the farm, it may go 10 to 15 miles from my house on back country roads and that's it. I only use it to haul grain with in the fall and it sit's the rest of the year. I haven't tagged this truck since 07'. If I wanted to tag it now what would I need to do? Just fill out 2290? Tell them the truck was idle for 5 yrs.? IDK. All of my grain is picked up at my bin, all I have to do is get it to the bin. Thought I might need to haul some rock this year for myself and need to get tags to do that...........the crusher is 30 miles away on state hwy.

You won't get tags without a 2290. My tax accountant does mine. You will be exempt but I get a kick out of the fact that I need a piece of paper telling me that I don't need that piece of paper!

Northern Illinois
Just search Form 2290. Make sure you have the form for July 1,2011 thru June 30,2012. Make sure as you need that one to get plates now. Complete it and take to the closest IRS office and get it stamped. Look at Part 2 on the form. This is the area that would apply to you to show suspended tax. You can populate the form on line and print it off. As far as that goes you could do this years 12/13 and get it stamped also.

don't need a stamped 2290 to get a tag or even required to file a 2290. most likely a 50k tag and insurance will work well which is what I suggest versus no tag or no insurance

West Tennessee

You have to sign an affidavit that the truck hasn't been used on a public road since the last time it was tagged. Yes you have to complete the 2290 to get the tags for it. If you need the tags soon you may as well plan on going to the IRS office in Jackson (or wherever is closest) and getting it stamped or use one of the online services (charge $10 for one truck or like $25 for up to 6). I've seen some of the 2290's take over 30 days to come back right now. Probably trying to push us to the electronic filing but don't offer a no cost way to do that. :-(

This is the form.

You can fill it out on your computer and then mail it. I like to fill it in on the computer so there are no issues with my poor penmanship.

If you drive a truck with a capacity to haul over 56,000 gross you file the 2290 and it has a place to say that you drive less then 7500 miles hauling ag commodities and then it shows, that you don't have to pay the Fed heavy use road tax

So it is a paper "showing that you don't need the paper"

If you are for hire it is the form you file to pay $550 per vehicle per year to Uncle Sam. A "just-because-we-can-excise-tax". Just like those $30 taxes on truck tires now.
