Malheur County Oregon
Suppose this can go under machinery. Machinery was used to do it.
As long as I get the pictures is the right order this should show everything from the demo of the old ditch to the site prep and pouring of a new irrigaton ditch we had done this spring. The last pic shows a similar ditch in action

Brian, looks good. Question on the slip form rig. is there a vibrator in that or does someone just manually work the concrete to keep the finish so smooth? What kind of speed does that move to work so well. How about concrete slump to achieve such nice results? thanks for the pics

That is amazing how perfect that is. Must have cost a fortune to do that work. Good job.

In the ditch that has water in it, what or how are the steps created in the water? Looks good

It looks like there is a chain from the edge of the moldboard of the grader in front and he drives backwards. That sure makes a nice ditch. How long can the field furrows be and still have the water get to the ends?

central - east central Minnesota -

That is cool !  Thanks for showing. Never in my life time would I have been able to see such - thanks to you and NAT!.
Now, here in Mn, no way would they allow such a ditch in the road right - away . . . . . Some drunk or texting driver would drive off and kill themselves and screw up the watering ditch . .  . If that didn't happen, then the frost/heaving of winter/spring would.

Does that happen? Someone hitting the ditch and breaking it?
Anyone ever take a kayak  down one ? lol
Thanks again for sharing !

Looks reallly nice! My question is how dry does that concrete have to be in order to hold that shape and not have it ooze down? Also, whats the life expectancy of that with no rebar in it?

There are trapezoid shaped steel plates that you put into the ditch to keep the water from flowing too fast if the ditch has some slope. If the ditch is flat enough you don't need the plates.

I have never seen ditches installed, but I have lots of experience removing ditches like that one. Matter of fact, we have a half mile of one of those ditches around the edge of a field on the home place that seems to be more in the way every year. Pivots are just the better way to go here if at all possible.

The hill on Highway 15 north of New Ulm has a U trough down the side of it for drainage. Several cars have had their undercarriage caught in it over the decades. I've often wondered how that was allowed for liability.....

Nice pics, would make a drainage ditch around here, not something to try to add more water in these parts. ;) Couldn't find an 40 that flat tho!!!!!!

With the boat the mud just flows out into the form. I have no idea on what the slump is. Travel speed is around and normal walking pace, they started pouring around 11:00 in the morning and by 1:00 they were done with it, approx 2200'. The cement has the fiberglass fibers and a properly installed ditch should last around 50 yrs or so. Second to the last picture shows a guy rolling in the expansion joints and the checks are made out of sheet metal cut and bent into a shape that matches the ditch.

That is a great new ditch you guys use up north of us. All of the concrete ditches we put in are able to handle 30 cubic feet of water a sec. (about twice of the size your using, Im guessing). We use slide gates that allow the water out onto the fields into 400 ft wide checks.
