Southwest ND | What color valve covers would a origoinal 366 engine have in a 1979 GMC 6000 truck? I was thinking blue but it has black covers with "mrgoodwrench" stickers and the owner insists it's the origional engine. Is there a rule of thumb on color? Doesn't make alot of difference here but just curious. TIA

NEMO | Sounds like a crate engine to me. Original would have been blue I believe.

The 366 in the 1978 Chevy C65 on my farm has blue covers. Sounds like a crate or reman to me as the reman Cat 3116 in my father's truck is labeled as a CAT Reman. The Goodwrench stickers indicate to me it is a factory reman.

![]() Leesburg, Ohio | Should be blue. Had a '77 C65 with the 366. We replaced the engine, but put in a Jasper...should have gone with a Goodwrench. The GM factory replacements were black with the Goodwrench label.

I think Chevy and GMC swiched to blue engines around '75. I always liked the orange ones from the 60's and early 70's.

I would say the color switch was 78 or very close. In 77, Olds was selling more cars than they could build olds engines for. They equipped certain model olds cars with chevy engines and promptly got sued by PO'd owners that wanted an olds engin in their olds car. Next year all engines were painted that same blue color and the window sticker on your new 78 GM car stated it had a GM engine built by various divisions of GM.

They could have been all new crate engines. The Mr. Goodwrench to me indicates that it's a replacement engine.
