Subject: Feon replacements?

Effingham, IL
I bought a used tractor that had the a/c system drained and recharged with a product called Enviro-safe. It still has r12 fittings. Does anyone know can you mix other replacements like Duracool with Enviro-safe. I was going to order some Enviro-safe, but there's like a $20 haz-mat fee on top of the shipping cost. Also what's everyone's experiance with the replacements? Should I just flush the system and go back to 134a? Everyone's thoughts appreciated!!! Craig

Some of that stuff is very explosive. I just bought a 30# container of R 134A at NAPA for $78. Rural King has adapter compressor fittings for $8 and some change. Accidentally lose the existing charge, replace the receiver/dryer,pump the system down and recharge the system. $2.60 a pound makes it pretty cheap cold air.

The reason the stuff has a Has Mat charge is that it is mostly propane and butane. Get rid of that crap and convert it to 134A, please, for the sake of you and your family, don't mess with a hydrocarbon refrigerant like envirosafe. In 18 or more states, the stuff is flat out illegal because of the fire danger.

I'd use what ever you use on everything else on the farm. If its r134a keep it simple and go with that.

As for Duracool up here in Canada its pretty much taking over for the old r12 systems for R12 replacements. Basically because anyone can go down to the local auto parts store and buy a can for $10 bucks and get thier a/c going again cheap. It seems though in the USA its banned still.

I know several dealers 10 years ago said it was bad stuff........now they sell it over the counter by the box full!

I have most of my stuff on R134a because when they crapped out I had to take it all apart anyway. On 2 other machines I have duracool in them cause I just topped them up etc.

There is a very good product called "Freeze 12". I know you can add Freeze 12 to R12, and it works real good. I use it in my JD 8760 (that I refuse to convert to R-134a). I believe that R-12/Freeze 12 works better (gets colder) than R-134a. You do have to have the 'license' to purchase Freeze 12, but it does not cost all that much..seems like it was about 1.25 x the cost of R-134a.

A local Car Quest parts store used (years ago) to sell what I think was Freeze 12. One of their customers put it in a truck with a leaky air conditioning system. One morning when the driver fired the engine, it blew the hood off, and the starter out of the flywheel housing. Probably stained the drivers seat brown also. The owner of the parts store had to pay for repairs and has refused to sell anything but 134 since.

Had a ford and jd tractor converted to r-134a and had nothing but problems. The jd kept blowing
the compressor seals and throwing the belt. Went through 3 compressors on that one under jd warranty. The ford burnt out the clutch right away and kept throwing the belt no matter how tight it was. Had them
try the duracool in them and never had another problem. They both cooled much better with the dura cool
than the 134-a. Together we probably got 3 or 4 hours on 134a and 400 hours on the duracool. Expensive
lesson learned use duracool the firs time in conversions.

We use redtek 12 in our machinery no problems easy to use blew a hose last spring cut hose installed a barb added 3 cans and were going in 20 min. Lots of dealers using it up here now to its flammable but so is 134a which gives of deadly gas in presance of flame. Have not heard of any issues with duracool or redtek most the bad press comes from the makers of 134 like dupont.
