Subject: JD 4630 rear axle bearing replacement

Illinois
We have a John Deere 4630 that appears to have a rear axle bearing failure. What are the basic steps to replace the axle bearings??
Does the SoundGuard cab have to be removed?? Does the transmission cover plate have to be removed to pull the axle out??
thanks in advance!

Just the ring of bolts around the planetary housing near the transmission case and pull it away. My experience is on 4640 and 4840 JD's. I would recomend you get the pages from JD to get the specs and rolling drag etc. for the balance. A bit heavy but not difficult. Dan...

A concrete slab to work on makes the job a lot easier. A rolling overhead chain hoist or a big heavy rolling A-frame is good to have. A forklift will work.

Very rudimentary mechanic work. Drain fluid, pull wheels and housing. Don't heat the bearing with a torch. Use induction or oil. If it spun, don't build up. Either rough up the axle or buy a new one.

A pallet jack will work IF you have duals to pull the tires & axel away from the trans. Little more fun to reinstall that way. IF your bearing ate the axel Deere does have differant bearins availble so you can machine the axel a "few" 1000s. A forklift also works if chained to the tire to remove, makes it a little easyer to reinstall. The older tractors used a lead ball to get things set I belive

Get a manual that tells how to do the lead ball method, & use it-the preload will never change, if you do it right, it won't do what it did ever again... look at the brakes while you're in there, see if the linings are loose on the rivets. If they are, you might oughta look at the other side. The axle can be ground undersize, JD has a bearing, if it's not too bad. Grinding specs come w/ the US bearing...

I might suggest reading old posts about this. I asked alot of questions to NAT guys and they all were johnny on the spot to help.

If you don't already have it I would buy the shop manual for that tractor. That should tell you about all the torques and such. It gives a pretty good explaination about how to go about the procedure but I still asked questions on here when the book wasn't quite clear enough.

Heavy pieces so have some equipment around to help you with it. Good luck Darren
