Started having issues last fall, had to cross the solenoid to get it to start. It randomly dies, and wont start by the key. Now, the only way it will run is if I flip the switch in the top right corner of cab to service, or hold the key in the start position. But can't lift bucket or anything like that. Anybody have any ideas? I saw a post some time ago that the display panel could cause electical issues. I went to JD and that part is no longer available. I'm also not sure if that is the problem or not as it shows seat belt, battery, and fuel level when it's running. Key switch was replaced not long ago.

More than likely the instrument panel is corroded. The warning lights are divided into groups. There are lines around each group. They are either gray or gold in color. If gray the instrument panel cannot be repaired. If gold in color the panel can be sent to Ag-Express to have it checked out. They will not repair panels with gray lines.

If you have a friend with a JD of the same vintage or they have an LX or LS New Holland skid loader you can ask to plug their panel into your machine. The panel does not need to be installed in the loader, just plug it in.

We have sold NH instrument panels to people with JD loaders. Keep in mind since the engines are different the senders may have different values and may not show exactly the same values.

Before doing anything, be sure the correct start procedure check list is done. With the key in the off position watch the instrument panel as you sit in the seat. When you sit in the seat the instrument panel lights should light up and do a self check. Then all the lights should go out except for the seat belt and park brake. Fasten the seat belt and the seat belt light should go out. If all this happens as stated, the safety system is operating correctly and the engine should crank when the key switch is moved from the off position to the start position.

I agree with Mike. That instrument panel is usually the culprit. The old NH part number is 87029539 if you can find new old stock or used. The new part number is 87366162 and they are about $1140. As mentioned, Ag Express can sometimes fix the gold ones.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. The proper start procedure works very rarely. Often times it's just dark and does nothing.

I have bypassed the panel on several of ours by putting a jumper wire across the service-run switch. That and a toggle switch instead of the seat switch will eliminate most of the electrical issues.

Also good to know as I looked up the part number suggested and based on pictures (may not be actual item?), it doesn't look like what I have at all. My display is up front and center basically, to the left of the key.

Here is a pic of what should be in there. #87029539 CLUSTER

Messicks shows that it subs to the new number 87366162 https://www.messicks.com/parts/new-holland/87029539

But you are right. When I googled the new number, it does not look anything like the old one. Not sure if there is a kit to make the new one fit or if you have to MAKE it fit, or if the picture is wrong.

Best to call Messicks and ask them. They also have a reman available for a little bit less: https://www.messicks.com/parts/new-holland/87366162r

Or if yours has the gold trim like in the picture below, send it to Ag Express to repair.

Without looking up in the parts catalog, the part number given is for a later model and the price for yours is considerably more. There is a square plug in the engine compartment near where the seat harness is secured near the top of the seat mounting plate. If you cannot find it, flip and latch the seat up and look on the backside of the seat mounting plate. Disconnect the plug. There will be three terminals in the plug. The female terminal on the machine side of the connector should have battery voltage at all times. On the seat side of the connector, take an ohm meter and probe between the male terminal and the female terminals. Have someone sit in the seat. You should have continuity between the male terminal and one of the female terminals. Then fasten the seat belt and then you should have continuity between the male terminal and the other female terminal. If that all checks out, your safety switches and seat harness are working.

You will probably need to contact a New Holland dealer for the part number. Instrument panels were not available from New Holland for several years but New Holland finally came with one the last year or so. The parts catalogs does not list that part number.

When the panels were not available, a person in PA came up with a kit to install a newer instrument panel in the old loaders. He sold them on ebay. I may have his number somewhere but could not find it in a quick search. If interested, you can probably reach him by going to Haytalk.com and register for the forums. Once registered you will see a green square with your initial in it towards the top of the forum. Click on the green square. Then you can click on start a conversation. His online identifier is PaMike. He sold a bunch of those kits and they were much cheaper than what NH wants for the new panels.

While on haytalk.com, go to the machinery forum. At the top of the list of threads click on My NH Repair etc. You will be taken to the first post, if not, navigate to the first post. You should see an index of all the posts in that thread with links to take you to that particular post. If you do not see the list, scroll down the first post and you will see "See More". Click on see more. Scroll down the list to the skid loader section and you will find wiring schematics for the various NH loaders. The LX and LS models are what are similar to the Deere. These simple drawings are drawn from the hard to follow NH printed schematics in the manuals. The drawings are for the starting circuit only. The drawings break down each step in starting the engine. The LX and LS drawings are close to the same, only the LS drawings are all in one pdf, where the LX are in individual pdfs.

Thanks again guys, no telling how much time and money this saved me. I'm hoping to do the jumper wire in safety switch while I either get the board fixed or replaced.

If the safety system is not working then the only way that a bypass switch will do you any good is if the seat switch is bad. Take the time to check the switches and seat harness as I instructed in an earlier post, if that checks out, not any bypassing in that area will unlock the pedals. The power to unlock the pedals comes from the instrument panel.
