Subject: Cow passed a bunch of placenta before the calf?

perryton, tx
I found a cow in labor this afternoon, a small amount of the water bag showing. I came back an hour later and she had an unusual looking string of placenta almost dragging the ground, but no calf. I feared a backwards calf or some other problem but once in the chute I found the calf right there presented normally, so I pulled it and it was a pretty good sized healthy calf. I wondered if it was possibly twins or something like that but the calf seemed too big to be a twin and never found any sign of a 2nd calf out in the pasture where she had been.
