Frederick, Md | I had a cow calve on Saturday night, it got its colostrum shortly after it was born. I tagged, weighed, and used enforce 3, and kicked the pair out into gen pop. Cow is a good mother (6yr old) and milks extremely well. I noticed Monday morning the calf seemed a little gaunt looking, but a couple of the cows tits looked like they were nursed so I went on about my day. Monday evening while putting out straw I noticed the cows tits were quite large and the calf looked even skinnier than that morning. The calf was attempting to nurse but was sucking hair and never got to the tit. Sometimes I think they are the dumbest animals alive.
I went ahead and put the cow in the chute, the calf quickly drained 2 quarters. I felt pretty good that everything would be ok. 5hrs later during my pre bedtime check that calf was dead.
I'm dumbfounded by this, and I hate losing one. Anyone have any thoughts? My assumption is that it over ate. | |
