Subject: Old farmer wisdom

Pierce county WI
I just got thinking about this with prices starting to get to a profitable level. There was so many chastising farmers for not making sales. It reminded me of an old farmer I knew. He was a very successful crop and dairy farmer that had kinda turned over the reigns to his kids and did some part time AI work. I was probably 28? or so, and scraping by. Milk had been down for a while. Then it had came up a little. I asked him when he was there breeding a cow what he thought about contracting some milk since the price was up. He said something that stuck with me. He said something along the lines of "why would I contract at a price I know I'm not making any money? If I don't contract, at least I have hope it gets better." See, something happens when prices get low. They usually turn and go higher. Just got to thinking about that.
