Subject: Teachers Are Not Against In School

Northern Illinois
Teachers seem to get getting some unwarranted criticism in this back to school debate. Teachers are right to be concerned that a school or schools does not take the proper safety precautions. Here is the letter that Illinois Education Association (Illinois teachers union) put out on this issue.

https://ieanea.org/2020/07/29/joint-statement-from-the-illinois-educ...

A couple of points in the letter.

"a practical safety plan that includes a clear line of responsibility and enforcement," this is one thing that concerns the teachers in my family. They have seen to many times where the administration will not enforce the written code. They are concerned that what is in writing today will not be enforced by the administration and it will fall back on the teaching staff. The written word today is if a student is observed 2 times not following the mask rule they will be sent home and not allowed back and thus will have to be an e learning student. Teachers do not have confidence that this will be enforced.

"We are working to ensure that any district providing in-person instruction in Illinois is prepared and able to abide by the safety measures outlined by the state, the federal government, and medical professionals." Teachers are concerned that some school districts may attempt to save some $$ and not fully implement the required safety measures.

It has been posted that it is unacceptable for a teacher to not want to teach in a classroom for fear of getting sick. Others have said if they don't want to teach they should be fired. I look at this as teachers not wanting to be put in an unsafe working environment. It is akin to asking a farm employee to go into a bin of moldy corn with the auger running without the aid of safety equipment. Would you fire a worker for not doing that? Would you say not doing that is unacceptable?

It is all about mitigating the risks. They are not asking that the risks be eliminated just minimize them for everyone.
