Subject: Kill Canada thistle roots

Hello all,
I am a new member. I moved to a new house in NW of Ohio last fall. In the beginning of the summer, A LOT of Canada thistles popped up in my landscape (most of them were 3-4 ft tall). It was my fault that I did not pay attention to them in the spring. However, I tilled the flowering ones (then I found out that I made a mistake). In just 2 weeks, even without water or rain, they started to re-grow but this time is in landscape and lawn. I am using RoundUp for landscape and garden, which is very effective and 2,4D + surfactant for lawn which is effective only at pre-bud stage. But I am not sure if 2,4D will kill the roots. I understand that Canada thistles have extensive roots system, so I have to make that I am using a herbicide that kill the roots. I bought Milestone but I have not started using it. I heard it is very toxic to the garden and it can stay in the soil for up to 3 years.
Is it what I am doing enough or should I start using Milestone on the lawn for better roots control?

Thank you.
