| In the old days the Govts way of trying to help out was by offering low interest loans. In 1972 in S Dak it rained and rained and rained in the spring. Feedlots were a mess. We had 2 tractors with a 70 foot cable pulling a feed wagon around that we could only load half full. Rented any little pasture to try get cattle to drier ground (about 1100 head). Calving was a mess with scours and pneumonia etc. Rain from every little cloud that came over and no sunshine. Along came the govt and the way they handled it was that you had to prove your loss on the farm (grain only, not livestock). Then they would borrow you that amount, or less than that amount, at a very low interest. They forgave $5000 of that loan. Most guys got the low interest loans and paid down the bank. You could buy a new pickup for $5000 or less back then. They sold a lot of pickups that year. That is my first memory of the friction that farm programs caused between farmers and town people. | |
