Subject: Advice on making a saddle cut on pipe

I'm making a sort of manifold thing on 1 5/8 pipe. Any advice on how to figure out how to cut the "saddle" part from a pipe for making a T, other than trial and error? Actually if it had my choice the T would be at about a 30 degree angle but that may be getting in too deep for a hack welder like me.
