The most shade tolerant species were orchard grass (as well another grass considered a weed in the US) and birdsfoot trefoil.

The article at the following link contains a table of 45 species rated for moderate and dense shade tolerance:

orchard grass ranks high in this table but birdsfoot trefoil did not do so well.
crownvetch is ranked higher than birdsfoot and thus presumably would be a good species for living mulch systems.
kura clover also ranked well.
