Central Ohio | At the moment we are roughly doing a 2/3, 1/3 soybean-corn rotation. We work most of the ground for corn (no-till a bit of the corn) and then no-till (direct seed for the strict!) soybeans for two years.
None of the ground has ever been sub-soiled. I have a feeling we are dealing with some deep compaction on some farms, though it is a lot of lighter soil. Have been wanting to in-line rip but am a bit scared about soft ground the next year. Wondering if some tillage radishes or annual rye would be a good substitute.
Any tips on how to hasten the transition from this practice to true no-till? 4-5 years is a long period for culture shock! I was thinking some cover crop might be helpful if we can get some beans off early in the fall.
Any tips or similar (success!) stories would be appreciated.
Thanks. | |
