Subject: How do you check for a bad coil?

Kentucky
Have a gas 424 IH. Had been starting and running ok. Started to run rough after 10 or 15 minutes.
Lost power like crazy. Changed points, plugs and plug wires, points and condenser, air filter, and had a carborator kit done. Ran better for a little bit (30) minutes. Started running rough again, lots of black smoke, after a few minutes started running great for 10 minutes, then started missing bad again. Shut it off, and now won't even start.
Pretty aggravated. Thought maybe the coil. Ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Daryl
