Back during the Reagan administration Virginia Senator John Warner had a farm in the Shenandoah Valley. Senator Warner would throw a big BBQ party each fall and invite his high powered friends from Washington DC. One year after sweetcorn season was over for most growers we got a call from a produce dealer. He was desperately searching for three hundred dozen ears of fresh sweetcorn for the Warner party. We had a patch of late sweetcorn. The dealer showed up with a refrigerated box truck and we loaded him up with corn. As I remember we did not bother counting the ears. We just kept on throwing corn into the truck until the dealer said he had enough. It was a big pile. President Ronald Reagan attended the Warner party that year. There is a very good chance that President Reagan ate some of our corn at the party. |
