Subject: in furrow fertilizer test

Clark SD

Planted corn into a green rye cover crop on 5/5. We were putting as it turns out about 5 gals of 10-34-00 in furrow. We run out of fertilizer on the far end of the field, so there was no fertilizer put on for a half of a round.
The rye was sprayed with roundup and triple flex on 5/11, the corn started to emerge on 5/20 about the time that the rye turned completely brown.
The first picture shows the corn where it got the fertilizer on 6/9,it was 8 inches tall leaf over and had 4 leaves with collars.
The 2nd picture shows the corn on 6/9 that didn't get the fertilizer, it also had 4 leaves with collars, but was only 4 inches tall leaf over.
The 3rd picture shows what the corn looks like yesterday (8/7), it was taken in between the fertilized row and non fertilized row, to my untrained eye there seems to be no difference in hieght. This field was planted with a split planter cofiguration, with 6 rows of one hybrid, and six rows of a different one. The plants of the other hybrids looked to be the same between the fertilized and non fertilized.
The 4th picture shows the ears from one of hybrids, the one on the left is from the fertilized row, it weighed 156 grams, the right ear was from the non fertilized row, it weighed 143 grams.
The 5th picture shows the ears from the other hybrid, the one on the left was from the fertilized row, it weighed 131..3 grams, the one to the right was from the non fertilized row, it weighed124.6 grams.
This field is under center pivot irrigation, and been continious no-till for 20+ years. I dug under the rye residue and found earth worms near the surface, i am thinking the soil microbes are there also breaking down the rye residue, thus releasing nutrients for crop uptake.
