NW IOWA | Heard of using sugar at 1 lb./acre for feeding soybeans. Have any of you guys used sugar and if so when and how did you apply it? Can you spray it with RR application or do you need to use different nozzles to do better job? What other products has anyone used for foliar feeding soybeans? Looking to boost short and late planted beans and to help retain more pods (less aborting) on short beans. Was on a guys farm near Ventura, Ia. some years back who has been doing this to soys but can't remember his name. Remember he was using a lot of foliars of the ortho type. Any info appreciated!! bit north of London, UK | Sugar as plant feed, or sugar to help control aphids - seems to have been a few posts on the subject recently. From other reading i have resolved to get myself a barrel or two of black strap molasses for the coming season. Anybody here use BSM on fieldcrops? (some organic / garden veg guys really rate it). Thanks, john.

bit north of London, UK | Hi Tom, Black strap molasses BSM is what is left after the final of many rounds of cane juice boiling and sugar extraction. So not so much sugar, but loaded with trace elements, sulphur, potassium etc. More importantly, the stuff is a cheleating agent, so aforementioned nutrients are in a very bio available form. Not hard to imagine the balance of the product is complex plant derived carbon molecules, halfway or more to humic acid. BSM is often the bulk of what is in garden centre / hydroponic 'wonder fert' Some debate as to whether it should be applied to leaf or not, due to pest attraction. Probably no problem in conventional ag. Considered a great soil biology stimulator. Thats an overview of what i have read so far. Loads on the www, the most interesting of it written by organic veg growers / hash growers!!! eg http://www.juneausales.com/molasses.html John Edited by JWC 7/25/2008 17:11

Decaturville TN | The mix used around here is 1 lb confection sugar, 1 pint Coron, 5 lbs foliar fertilizer mixed with roundup. I have used this mix several times and it seems to work good although I have no data to prove anything.
