Subject: choppers: 3975 jd vs 7500 hesston

We traded the old 7500 off on a new 3975 this year. Even after sharpening the knives, setting the shearbar, and setting the length of cut as long as it will go it pulls way harder than the machine it replaced. Cut was very fine for haylage so we adjusted it and now its about right....mostly 1/2" peices with some 1" or so. Have a KP which is working beautifully. The KP on the hesston gave lots of trouble but even when it was working right we could chop as fast as you wanted to drive...usually around 6 mph.if the wagons would keep up. Even then the 8310 jd had plenty of ponies. With the JD it is 3.5 MAX and the tractor is ready to give up. My question is what can we do? The 8310 has a bad shift at that speed under full load and we have broken several sets of shear bolts because of it.

I am thinking take.out half the knives and set the feedrolls to keep the same LOC.
Could the KP be set too tight? Not sure that is.possible. or maybe the cross auger takes that much more hp.

Setup guy admited he had never set one up before which was obvious after the first day running. Not sure he knew lefty loosey righty tighty, judging from his work.
