Subject: No load amp draw on electric motor?

NE Nebraska
I have a couple of questions. What should a regular single phase, 220 volt motor use for amps under no load compared to full load amps? I have 2, 3hp motors ( one Lesson and one Dayton) that both pull about 15.5 amps under no load. I have a 5hp Dayton right next to the 3hp Dayton and it only pulls 6.2 amps under no load. As I place a load to all the motors the amp draw increases. Why are the 3hp motors pulling that many amps? All three motors are less than 3 years old.

I always thought a motor operated at a fairly low amp draw ( after startup) and increased as a load was applied to it.
