Northeast Kansas Near Topeka
I live in NE ks.near Topeka. Almost no pheasants here and very few quail. Turkeys and deere have exploded. You can see flocks of 100 or so in the soybean fields gleaning the beans about every day. Deere in groups of 15 to 20 working the same fields.
Just do the math. 25 turleys ,half female ,hatches 12 or so eggs each hatch. Talk about reproducing like rabbits !! The difference is the rabbits are on the bottom of the food chain.Hawks,Owls, cayotes ,cats, dogs all work on them. I don't know of any predator for turkeys or as far as that goes predators on deere. I don't think it is going to get better unless disease solves this. We did have purple tunge ( think that is what it was called ) killed a lot of deere in 2013.
Feral hogs are taking Okla and Tex.
No trapping of possums, skunks and etc. are hurting the quail IMO. I also figure when we are overrun with deer ,the Mountain Lion will move in ,if us humans don't shoot them first.Ha
