Subject: Harvest

Finished first field of dry land corn (central Illinois) yesterday. 60 acres planted April 27 made 52 bu./ac. I had a great stand and perfect conditions until mid June. We have received 1 inch of rain since mid June and 0.0 precip since July 12. This field had 170-180 potential at planting. I had revised my expectations to 100 bu./ac. in mid July and at the end of August revised down to 40 bu./ac. after walking the field. Irrigated crops in this area are still going to be very good, beans have lost the top end due to the excessive heat. Dry land beans however are a disaster. Despite what the prognosticators may say you cannot raise soybeans without rain in August and we have had none for darn near 2 months. No rain in forecast, highs of 86-96 thru next Wednesday, sandy loam beans are dead or soon will be and the heavy ground is fading fast. I have never seen good black ground soybeans die off like what is currently happening.
