Subject: used bulk tanks

candor ny
At the moment I use two dairy kool tanks and the one leaks and the compressor acts up and has mo 39 in it and cools slow. I think i want to replace both with something in the 1000 to 1500 gallon range. Who made the best ones. I am leaning toward a Mueller but know where there is a girton that was all rebuilt eight years ago on the inside but have been told to stay away from them not sure why and is sunset just to antiquated to mess with. Also a surge tank goes through a auction tomorrow going to go watch it sell. What goes wrong with them. Thanks

Faunsdale, AL
Have a Girton 3000 gallon and 3 Muellers ranging frm 1600-ish to 2300 gallons. The 16?? is the newest one and is for sale. Got a new 2000 gallon DairyKool and the new Girton in the 1970's. DairyKool started leaking freon in the 90's and we had it repaired once. That didn't last, so we found a used Mueller to replace it with. Unfortunately it was a leaker too. Ended up using it with just the bottom plate (lucky the upper plate was the leaker) with a precooler for many years.

A Mueller dealer can tell you the range of serial numbers that they had trouble with the plates leaking on. We thought we were buying one that had beat the odds even though it was in the serial number range of the leakers. Turned out it was leaking and got progressively worse, so in my book, stay away from those serial numbers unless you get a guarantee it doesn't leak AND the dealer installs a pump down solenoid and pressure switch to keep the freon out of the tank during the wash cycle. I did that on the leaking plate and was able to put up with it for a few years that way, but if you had one that wasn't already leaking, pumping the freon out of it into the condenser (may need an accumulator) during the wash cycle will keep a lot of the higest pressures off the plates.

The Girton was an icewater jacketed tank installed with an ice builder and precoolers. During the time we had it, herd size doubled and we needed more tank volume, so found another used Mueller (not a leaker!) which needed to go in the floor space that was occupied by the ice builder cabinet. So we converted the Girton to R12 (now R134a) using the compressors off the ice builder and used a well water cooled plate cooler for a year or two before reinstalling the ice builder outside the barn with a R22 compressor on it to make ice water to keep up with the cooling load.

So in summary, the Girton though it has had some problems, is still cooling milk after 40 years or so and the DairyKool has been storing water for our TMR for the last 20! Muellers can be some of the best and some of the worst, just need to find out before you buy.

Not sure what would have been rebuilt about the Girton???, but do inspect it or any other tank you are considering for cracks around the outlet. The Muellers we have do not have the outlet welded into the outer skin, it is siliconed to seal the insulation there and that lets the neck move as the inner tank changes temperature during wash cycle etc. and helps prevent cracking. The Girton 3000 gallon we have has the outer skin welded to the neck of the outlet pipe. It has cracked around the elbow that leads to the outlet and been repaired many times . The last time we TIG-ed it, I cut the outer skin loose around the neck of the outlet so it can float. That has worked so far.

Cannot tell you anything about a Sunset.

I have had good luck with our Mueller. Back when they made leakers they had 1-1/2" outlets, although there is no guarantee that a 2" outlet means it is good. Find someone honest who knows, and check the S/N before you buy one. There are lots of 1000-gal size tanks for sale in WI if you can't find one close.

Personally, I would not mess with a repaired tank. I have heard of many tanks with Freon leaks being 'fixed', but it seems that once is never enough.

We have had a 1500 gallon Dairy Kool DKF1500 since 1993. It has been a good milk tank. I did have to put a new outlet valve on it last year, we bought a new butterfly valve to replace the pitted plunger style it had. We do need to keep an extra diaphram on hand for the washer drain valve. If you are going to have two compressors on it, a Dairy Kool one might be better than a Mueller because Dairy Kool splits their cooling plates right side, left side. Mueller is top and bottom. If you have trouble with the compressor on the bottom plate on a Mueller you will not be able to cool the first milking very well. Some of the older Surge tanks did not have a stainless outer jacket, I remember seeing one being used that had rust spots where its coating had come off. Those Surge tanks were white, green, or brown in color. I think the coating was porcelain like on a washing machine or dryer. Girton was made near Danville, PA (central PA near the Susquehanna River).

Most of them won't be listed online. There are usually ads in Hoard's Dairyman.

I am good friends with my Mueller dealer, known him since he was in high school and he's near 50 now, if you want to talk to him email me your phone number. I don't want to post his number as he is crazy busy already. He has a dozen or so used tanks around and knows where there are more. He doesn't trade that size in often, he is selling mostly 4000-6000 size tanks now so the trades would be 2000-up.

I just bought a used Surge 1000 leaker from him to use for sprayer water.
