WC IL
I am wanting to make an area for my kid and future kids to play that i do not have to mow around. My first thought was rubber chips, but that is going to get costly. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. TIA

Gravel and grass worked when I was growing up. Made tougher kids that way

Cyprus mulch if you can find it. It is a shredded texture, and stays put pretty well. But it is expensive too.

I have been thinking about the same thing, I was leaning towards finding some gravel conveyor belting to lay down.

...for climbing helmets bear a risk of strangulation.
I stayed with grass and use a brushcutter to mow around.
On public playgrounds I see wood chips sometimes.
Conveyor belts can be slippery and you will have puddles after rain. But they would be good around the sand box for easier collection of scattered sand.

Houses make excellent places for kids to play, I always make sure my 1 yr old wears a helmet when crawling on the roof

Just run down your local gravel road with the skid steer and pick up some gravel that way... Cheap and local*

Pea gravel? You can get it by the ton at any cement plant. From my experience they will tell you that your truck will haul twice as much as it probably should and get a pretty good laugh out of shooting it out of the tube into your truck (onto your truck) and squatting it to the frame. Well that's the sense I got as I was driving away with my bumper dragging and hoping my tires wouldn't pop. :-) It did all work out good though.

Use wood mulch. If you are really thinking safety, there's a guide book on depth of it and/or rubber chunks, pea gravel etc. I think the recommendation is 8" of mulch for almost any backyard sized playground equipment. Rubber is about 3X the cost, but it doesn't decompose, however if its colored it may fade or run/stain over time. Don't use pea gravel unless you want it in or on shoes, floors, carpet, cars, etc...

Mold . . ...
Weeds . . .
Smell . . . .
Dampness / wet . . .

Pea rock or very fine seal coat rock acts as a nice cushion. Drys quickly and allows drainage. Doesn't support weeds, no mold and isn't smell - as it doesn't break down.

Think about it, kids will be placing, what ever you put down, in their mouths - do you want decomposing wood chips/multch (made from who knows what contaimanated recycled wood products).

Some of the local school playgrounds have a rubber/foam type pad that goes under the swings and sliding board. It's about three inches thick, seems durable and soft, and doesn't stay wet. I don't know where it comes from, but I know of one that has lasted about ten years and is just starting to show wear.

It is a wonder that we survived our childhoods if all this is necessary. I don't remember any serious injuries except for an occasional broken arm from falling out of a tree when I was young.

How about gum balls. The playground at the school where I went was covered up in sweet gum trees. When you found a green one you could make a person squeal.

I did about a 16' x 20' one here couple years ago. Laid down that landscape fabric, which didn't totally stop weeds but does help, then laid down several tons of pea gravel. My oldest has rubber mulch at her school playground, ruins anything but black tennis shoes in the first week. What I did was dug down about 6" with box blade with a slight slope and cut about a 6" drain ditch out each end of the low side. filled the area level full with the pea gravel and the water leaches out after a rain.
