Theoretical start of calving was Thursday. First young cow broke water Friday afternoon. I went out to check on them this morning and found first calf of the year getting what looked like her first colostrum. A nice maybe 70-75 lb heifer which is what I wanted from this mating. A number of others look like they will be close behind. Still tough to find an area not covered with snow or ice. Warmed up a bit yesterday, rain due today. Ground is still frozen hard and deep just a thin layer of thawed soil in this one southwest facing spot. The cows all seem to be hanging around the hay feeder. I hope this calf dooesn't get stepped on. I'm thinking one of those Common Sense calf shelters may be a good idea. Here's a picture. Calf is probably a few hours old. Jim
