Subject: Legal question

Zabcikville, TX
Not moral or ethical. Am I allowed to mix corn and a poison to kill chickens? Will be sprinkled on our yard only, not the neighbors. The crap EVERYWHERE, sidewalk being the biggest problem. They are in our yard A LOT, most of the day. If it was 1 or 2 it wouldn't be a problem, but there's upwards of 20 damn chickens running around all day! The lady next door is (IMO) just plain weird. Wanting to raise the chickens organically. I've never seen her feed them and absolutely despises farmers and their GMO's and chemicals. Sorry, end of "goofy neighbor" rant.

If you don't like the neighbor, I'd just call law enforcement. You start poisoning her chickens and you will probably end up being the bad guy out of the deal. Can of worms no matter what.

You are going to stir trouble with that idea. Do you have a dog that would chase them off or eat them. I would put out a chicken feeder with some of that full gmo corn. When she sees what's going on tell her her birds looked malnourished so you wanted to give them something to eat, it's too bad they would no longer be organic.

A fence on the property line might be more expensive - initially - but it might be cheaper in the long run.

With the fence in place, I would say that any bird on your property is fair game (to harvest).     ;)

BB/pellet gun. Might be worth a try. Don't kill them but make it "unpleasant" for them to come over on your side.

My gut feeling is not only is it illegal (I have no proof, just a feeling).  But a worse case scenario is it not kill the chickens but somehow contaminate the eggs or meat that someone eats.

And if anyone were to do it, talking about it online is not  good idea.

Hmmm. I'm thinking fences are the best idea so far. Chicken wire is easy right? Or ask if she meant to share all that nice organic chicken, they will taste good.

That's a good idea. Post a sign warning that it was sprayed with dihyrdogen monoxide, warn that too much inhalation will cause death by fluid in the lungs...

Don't poison your own yard because of a neighbor's problem.
But I like the GMO corn thing: Feed them some of your GMO corn, then tell the neighbor her chickens are eating your GMO corn and picking at your bags of pesticide and that you'll start shooting at the thieves in a week so she has time to rig up a closed yard.
Organic chicken, yummy! Bon appétit!

You guys are great! Thank you! Instead of feeding the a toxic brew (I KNOW what works) I'll just feed them regular (GMO) corn. And let her give me thanks for helping her out! That's something I would've never thought of. And, the stuff I had planned to use, they wouldn't have made it a foot. Wink, wink!

Great White North
Is this in a town/city setting or country neighbors? If its town see if there is a bylaw about farm animals in town. Lots of places have these bylaws to stop the backyard farmers that want to raise chickens and such. If there isn't a bylaw talk to animal control, any pet here that is not on a leash when in the yard is fair game for the pound. She should have to fence the yard so they are not free range, its not your problem....but if you poison them it will probably become your problem.

Other good options are listed. Go ask a local yard care company for one of their signs that says they sprayed your lawn with something toxic, make sure she can see it easy, maybe drop by and tell her it "got sprayed".

AJ, as in some ways, I'm sure you are brilliant. We may meet someday and absolutely get along. Today isn't that day. So, when you have 20 chickens running around in your yard that aren't yours, and you have to step in chicken s**t before you go into your own home. Then post on one of my threads. Otherwise, I feel your posts a liberal and not helpful at all. Also, once it leaves the nozzle, I can't control it. I don't tell the wind which way to blow.

contact law enforcement, get a report wrote up. and maybe send her a letter that she has to sign for, that the next time her chickens come on your property they will be removed at your way of choice and she will pay for the cost of removal of the chicken and chicken waste. also keep the shell or brass that were used to remove the chickens : )

I like the "Free Chickens" sign in your yard the best. Just make sure to add, "this side of road only"! Poisoning would be a bad idea. The last thing you want is for someone to find a couple of dead hawks or eagles that ate the chickens after they died. Good luck. Joe

Just put a feeder out in your yard with a huge sign that says, "Roundup Ready corn or Liberty Link whatever." When the cops show up, all you have to tell them is you are planning to get some chicken so you are just getting your feeder ready for them. And I can feed my chicken whatever I want. Then the problem should solve itself.

Don't say a word, get one of those sprayers that hook to your water hose and set a few jugs of something that has the skull and crossbones on them where she can see while you are spraying just water. Be sure and wave and smile and be real friendly while you are spraying your yard. Be funny to watch her after that.

Yes, if she reported it, you would get in trouble for off label use of chemicals. A fine I guess, as you. Probably do not have a pesticides license to revoke.

cottonhauler - once it leaves the nozzle, I can't control it. I don't tell the wind which way to blow.
No, but you control the nozzle. Going back to the old thread, it's your responsibility to see none of what you or your contractors apply gets on the neighbor's property or person. Period. Regardless of the chemical, crop, or wind.

Back on topic the neighbor has the same responsibility where her chickens are involved. But she may feel as strongly about your chemicals as you do about her chicken droppings. I'm not sure what the answer is, perhaps politely pointing this out to her and offering to help build a chicken pen?

There have been numerous posts on Stock Talk about cows in corn fields. It seems that some states are "fence in" states and some are "fence out". I wonder if that applies in this situation? Check your state fencing laws. LOL
