Any gasoline engine oil with an API "SM " spec was bad news for any engine with a flat tappet cam, as the ZDDP additive necessary for flat tappet cam life has been eliminated. Until lately you were safe to use any API " C " spec diesel oil in older gasoline engines, as it still had the necessary ZDDP additive.
Now we need to pay attention to the API spec as the the latest Diesel API spec "SJ" oil for the new diesels with cat converter and particle trap also have the ZDDP additive removed.

Bottom line is, if it has a flat tappet cam, especially if it is an older gasoline engine, avoid oils with the API "SM" or "CJ" spec at all costs.
