Subject: CEC and lbs of N (NH3) applied

South-central Nebraska
I've always understood for our medium soils with around 3% OM they should be able to hold around 170-190 lbs of N. This would be fall applied NH3. Most CEC readings avg around 18-20.

So why do so many guys think they are able to apply 250-275 lbs of fall N as NH3?

What would your total N be with a yield goal of 230 bpa? This is a fair goal under our irrigation and conditions. Maybe I'm not putting on enough? Maybe other guys think they can get 275 bpa? Maybe because corn is $7.00 plus they are simply cranking up their rates and not caring about what leaches or runs off or the expense? Just thinking out loud after hearing some neighbors talk about what they applied this fall.
