Subject: HIGH nitrates

We planted rye and turnips in early september where we had taken corn silage off with the intent of grazing some calves. My mixture was looking about ready to turn out on so I sent a sample of both rye and turnips in to be nitrate tested. My turnips tested out at 57,000 ppm and the rye at 17,000 ppm. Anything over 9000 potentially fatal.

Has anyone any idea if they will grow out to where we can use this to graze, or is it so high it will not ever be safe? We had been extrememly dry but had a couple 1/2" showers to get things up and 2" about 10 days before I pulled my samples. We plan to wait a week or so and try again, but it looks like a long shot to me.
