Subject: how would i check if the thermostat is good on my cattle waterer, and check the temperature setting

How would i check if the thermostat is working on my cattle waterer, i want to make sure things are right before it gets too cold. Then my second question is how do you know what it is set at temperature wise?? is it just trial and error is there a better way to set it at just above freezing.
