Nebraska | Tuesday and Wednesday we had a constant wind of at least 50, with gusts up to 77 mph. The corn here is all on the verge of harvest with some already out. Most of the guys that have been harvesting saw 180 bushel yields drop from anywhere to 90-120 bpa after the storm. (Some fields with 5-10% loss but exceptional) A lot of the corn blew over while most of it just dropped ears from the constant shaking. What does a guy do with $500 per acre laying on the ground? While there are many factors that went in to why the corn dropped ears or broke off (besides wind, of course), a lot of brand wars are taking place. The higher moisture stuff that didn't get so tall definitely seemed to handle mother nature's test much better. It is definitely sickening when so many have worked hard in this drought to raise a crop. I have been hailed out completely before but the feeling is nothing like this... | |
