Subject: Had a fun hunt this morning... (PICS)

Frytown, Iowa

the dryer kept shutting off last night and the last time it did it was 4am... so after i got it running again i showered, grabbed my bow and decided to see if i couldnt arrow a deer...

i walked about 30 yards into a CRP patch an kneeled down on the ground beside this 5 ft. cedar... at daylight i seen this buck right behind me up the hill... i judged him to be about 120ish... a 2.5 yr old... i want his older brother... he walked within 20 yards of me but i chose the camera instead...

about a half hour goes by and its becoming lighter and the sun is peaking up on the other side of the creek vally... i seen another spike buck and a couple does but they are no where near where im sitting (on the ground)...

about another 15 mins go by and this 140ish sized 8 pointer stands up about 50 yards from where im sitting... farther down the hill... he gets up, turns around, and completely doesnt even know im there... im looking through my binoculars thinking "hes big enough... im going to shoot him, nice mass, good brow tines.... probably a 3.5 year old maybe 4.5" definitely older than 2.5yrs...

the buck sits back down and is completely hidden, however i seen him lay down near another little 5 ft cedar so i decided with the sun to my back and cresting the horizon i was going to stalk him and try to get within 20-30 yards... if he does stand up the sun should blind him enough that i would have a chance at a shot...

i should say he was down wind of me...

so i start walking towards him with my bow in one hand and my binoculars every 5 feet trying to find his antlers in the grass... nothing... i get withing 20 yards of the cedar and i still cant see anything...

then about 100 yards away i see this buck stand up and im thinking HOLY Cow! he is definitely a shooter... i completely miss judged him and by the way, how the heck did he get clear down there? this buck is licking the air and is down wind of me as well... i can see that this guy is easily 160 inches and would be my biggest buck yet... so im thinking how do i get down there?

just then that 140incher stands up 20 yards from me and im shaking soo bad now i couldnt get a shot off if i wanted to... the only reason i didnt shoot the 140 in. buck is because im hypnotised by this 160 incher 80 yards behind him....

the 140 inch can kind of see or smell something isnt right but isnt alarmed... doesnt blow or wheeze... just hops on down to the big daddy... they both are smelling the air and kind of hop/walk off across the creek...

sorry for no pictures of the 2 big guys as my hand was on my bow and i was shaking so badly i couldnt have held the camera still anyways...  :/  to be on the ground eye to eye with good sized bucks is FAR more addrenaline than up in the stand 20 feet...

what a morning...

i have been watching the 160 inch deer for 2 years now and have him on camera the past 2 years... i would soo love to shoot him.

another note is that every year for the past 3 years i have seen him in early muzzleloader season and would have had chances to shoot him each time if I had a gun tag ... early muzzle loader opens tomorrow.... tags are always sold out the first sale day...

You must feed them well, those are heavy bodied deer.

Frytown- You're making me drool on my keyboard!! That buck is huge! I hope I see one kind of close to that good in November. I guess the drought hasn't hurt their antler growth any huh?

Seems like you couldve watched a hunting show and got the same effect. "Hunting" is when you kill something, otherwise, you're just observing Mother nature.

West Texas
Hunting shows don't have bucks standing up unexpectedly 20 yards away. Not the same, IMO.

Yeah that's a stupid thing to say. Hunting and killing are not the same.

Frytown, that's a bruiser. Hope to see more pics of the hunt and the kill! I'm still trying for my 1st 160, too. Have a few that gross over 150. Last year finally let a 150ish walk. Took 3 pics of him instead. My dad gets all the big ones.
