Southwest Iowa - Trees and Ditches | I have a mid sized cow/calf operation, and am running low on pasture. I'm trying to develop a plan to get through the rest of the summer and fall. I usually background my weened calves to about 600 lbs with rations that include ddgs, corn, soy hulls and several other inputs that have skyrocketed in price. I usually winter my cows on processed hay bales only, but my hay stockpile isn't where I'd like it to be, and definitely won't allow me to feed from now through next May.
What alternative feed sources are others finding available?
I'm planning to bale more cornstalks this fall than usual, but those will need to be supplemented. Any RELATIVELY affordable supplements out there?
I've heard some dairies include leftover bread in their rations. Is this a common practice? Do cows do well on bread? What nutrition needs does that fill...what would it replace in a ration? |
