Subject: 1976-bringing home the old no.6 chopper

western iowa,by Denison
well with all the talk about choppers-brings me back to 1975?not sure on the year-Dad had owned a new idea uni-system with 3 other neighbors and was getting tired of not getting all the harvest done-so we bought a John Deere Number6 single row silage cutter at Denison-Iowa out of the backrow.
My brother Rick and dad went to Denison to pick-it up with the 1967 plymouth fury3 4 door car-(318-v-8) with a bumper hitch as Dad didn't have a pick-up!
A number6 is a flashback to the late 50's early 60's-1 row chain head and a blower with the knives on the blower-lets just say it would cut the ear in 2 and the stalks in 10 pieces,
The chopper cost Dad $600 and my brother Rick welded on it for a couple of days with the stick welder-Dad would never buy Iron so it was to the scrap pile to get the good stuff-I remember they had crafted two used license plates for sheet metal on the spout and we soaked all the chains in used oil.We pulled it at first with the 1650 oliver gas tractor and later when we needed to get more done it was put on the 2-85 white-we chopped 100 acres that year in the pit-took 5 days going 5mph-long days with a 1 row?THe next year would find us running a jd no 12 I found in the farm bureau paper for $450 thus started my buying and selling of equipment as I sold the chopper to dad for $475-

my chopper experience-have bought and sold 25- 3960 choppers,fox,gehl,new idea,john deere3940,3950,3960,3970,3975,4720,34,35,38,and 3800"s-gehl 600,860,1060,1250,1260-ih- 830-781,field queen,hesston 2000-150,2000-100 and 2 dion 1224's
800-c uni,709 uni 868 chopper-803-c uni with 6200 chopper
6750 john deere also ran 4 years and now have a 7500 john deere self propelled
best chopper of the bunch-none,they all break down and need parts-least breakdowns-probbably the hesston150-but couldnt blow hay worth a crap-been running these dion's and they seem to work the best in hay,and are a simple chopper.

I guess if you buy a chopper plan on repairs, theres no majic bullet-but the feed is nice to have, and you will learn a lot of repair knowledge
